"On the 4th martyrdom anniversary of Major Asad, Sangat Akil Azab, Sangat Saki Baksh, and Parvez Mehr — we pay tribute to the brave sons of Balochistan who embraced martyrdom in the fight for dignity and freedom."

The Scottish American Memorial, or Scots American War Memorial, is in West Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh. It was called "The Call 1914", and it was erected in 1927 and shows a kilted infantryman looking towards Castle Rock. Behind the main statue is a frieze showing queues of men answering the call by following a kilted pipe band. The memorial was given by Scottish-Americans to honour Scots who had served in the first World War.

Lest we forget.

Bronze statue of a kilted soldier seated on a stone base, holding a rifle, with a contemplative expression looking upwards. The base has an inscription reading "THE CALL 1914 - A Tribute From Men and Women of Scottish Blood and Sympathies in the United States of America to Scotland." Below the statue are red commemorative poppy wreaths with a few small bouquets. Behind the statue, a detailed bronze relief shows a historical battle scene. The setting is partially surrounded by green bushes under a gray sky.

Like every year when I can, I headed to Ypres to pay homage to fallen clansmen, together with members of other Scottish clans in Belgium.

"Some readers will be quick to draw modern parallels, especially to the rise of right-wing populism around the world, and the propensity for young men to be seduced by extremist movements, when they feel – as millions did in 1930s Germany – purposeless, disaffected or lost. But the real question that Crooked Cross raises is personal. What would you do if the people you love begin to espouse ideas you hate?"

Another rhyme: this Carson also died early from breast cancer like Rachel.

Instead, as the mountain meadows turn
green in the spring, the family's world
darkens further. Erich quits his servile
job to join the brownshirts, and swaggers
around town in his uniform and
jackboots — the Kluger parents feel
intense pride, although Herr Kluger, a
veteran of World War One, remains wary
about another bloody conflict. The
idealistic Helmy attends a Nazi rally and
is mesmerised. Carson writes: "He had no
warning of the destruction that would be
caused by the setting free of that power
for which he now shouted as hoarsely as
the others... Hitler was to them like some
splendid deliverer; a god... Their arms
flew out in the same signal — a forest of
stretching brown arms with the fingers
pointing to the little god with a
toothbrush moustache. Heil Hitler!"The lost 1934 novel

On Friday, lines of poetry by Jan H. de Groot were added to the portrait of John Frost on the eponymous bridge in #Arnhem. The old bronze plaque had been stolen this spring and replaced with a portrait of John Frost by a spontaneous campaign by the television program #EvenTotHier. Everyone was happy about this, but De Groot's poem was now missing from the monument, as Ada de Groot (daughter of) rightly pointed out to the municipality. The municipality's Heritage department commissioned me to come up with a solution. I advocated for a different location for the poem: on the brick piers on either side of the monument.
The monument is complete again. And has now been given a makeover. Because this message remains important to reflect on.
Proud of the result. Completely "Made in Arnhem." Thanks for the commission, Bob Roelofs, Pieter Polman, and Jeroen van Gaalen. And for the fantastic collaboration with Steven Frijlink. #Questa font by Martin Majoor and Jos Buivenga. Carving by De Smidse Metaal.

You will, maybe, understand more, about why so many people in #Vietnam fully support #FreePalestine much more. I feel like #Palestinians are resistance brothers & sisters. I'm far from alone with those feelings, across the globe. Especially with fellow survivors of #USAMilitary #bombings on our peoples, villages & cities.

WWIII wasn't started by a single action, it started a couple of years ago.
It will be up to future historians to agree on the pivotal moments that "started" it.
But it's chapters are being written before our eyes:

We offer our deepest respect to the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki whose lives were irrevocably changed. We are also profoundly grateful to the Australian, British, other Commonwealth, and American service men and women who fought for our defence and helped bring an end to the war.

Hiroshima before the war

"In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

... We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."

(John McCrae, written on May 3, 1915)

"16 years old when I went to the war,
To fight for a land fit for heroes,
God on my side, and a gun in my hand,
Chasing my days down to zero,"

Today 1st July, marks the anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme.

#OnThisDay in 1942, the village of #Lidice was completely destroyed. The men were shot, the women sent to a death camp. A few children were sent to SS families to be "Germanised", the rest sent to a death camp with the women. The area around the village was landscaped so that no trace remained. Hitler had ordered that the memory of Lidice was to die.

Lidice was chosen because a man named Vaclav Říha wanted to end his affair with Anna Maruščáková. He sent a cryptic note to her workplace, suggesting that he was involved in the assassination of Heydrich (he wasn't). Under interrogation, she mentioned that a couple of men from Lidice were in Britain. The Gestapo initially assumed those two men were the ones that had assassinated Heydrich. By 10th June, they'd realised their mistake, but by then Hitler had issued his decree, and so Lidice was destroyed.
