The @dfg_public has approved a major research proposal submitted by the University of Lübeck, UKSH, and the @fraunhofergesellschaft providing approximately €4.3 million for funding a novel Magnetic Particle Imaging (#MPI) scanner.
Purchased (from a major retailer, not proud of that but it is what it is) four Mini PCs each for $129 U.S. Intel N150, 12gb ram, 2.5gbps nic, for substantially less than a 32gb #dram #sodimm kit alone! 4 whole computers (without storage or OS. The version with a 128gb ssd and Windows is $169.) These for a #cluster, so 16 cores, disturbed 48gb memory. Yes, existing old 10gbps nfs server and a small 10/2.5gbps switch.
But with #RAM prices out of control? ~$60 per core and 48gb #MPI #compute!
@raccoon granted, #Valve did already commit themselves to it being "open like a PC" so they can't sell at a loss. They at least need to break even in terms of cost to avoid businesses like datacenters to go: "Hey, that's pretty good!" and order like 1000+...
- My University did that with the #PS3 and ran them as clusters becaude even tho #YellowDogLinux and any #OtherOS only gets 2 threads, the #Cell was still a competent and affordable #ppc64 machine that one could use #MPI and do #clustering at full blast without breaking a sweat. And mind you #Sony lost out €100+ just in parts cost on every PS3 phat sold at launch because winning the #FormatWar with #BluRay against #HDDVD was more important long-term.
