@raccoon granted, #Valve did already commit themselves to it being "open like a PC" so they can't sell at a loss. They at least need to break even in terms of cost to avoid businesses like datacenters to go: "Hey, that's pretty good!" and order like 1000+...

• My University did that with the #PS3 and ran them as clusters becaude even tho #YellowDogLinux and any #OtherOS only gets 2 threads, the #Cell was still a competent and affordable #ppc64 machine that one could use #MPI and do #clustering at full blast without breaking a sweat. And mind you #Sony lost out €100+ just in parts cost on every PS3 phat sold at launch because winning the #FormatWar with #BluRay against #HDDVD was more important long-term.

Picked up porting #NixOS to #ppc64 again ~ early Summer or so. Life has certainly been easier ever since I gave up on glibc w/ ELFv2 and just started focusing on using ELFv1 instead.

I certainly wouldn't wanna try to actually run `nixos-install` right now - it'll prolly just brick the Debian installation that I'm using as a host for these shenanigans. But chances are higher that this'll get somewhere this time! :blobcat_mlem:

Yesterday evening I unceremoniously and sadly deleted, one by one, every app every photo every video and every document - all data from icloud - using a lovely pink iPad Mini.

The day before was the same, for several iphones, then a purged Apple Watch too. The laptops were before, long ago. My favorite was the 1Ghz Titanium G4 PowerBook - I'll always miss that perfection.

So, goodbye to modern Apple Inc. I loved your ways and means, your engineering prowess, industrial design, and the inspiration in every direction offered over so many decades.

I'm keeping the water-cooled Quad Core G5 PowerMac (PPC64 970MP A1177). You can attempt to pry it from my cold dead hands alongside a GP101... but please do not touch that one last, beautiful, and forever best example of IBM + Apple innovation - before Apple leadership sold out to Intel, pushed upon every emacs user the worthless Touchbar, and the scissor-chicklet keyboards with a lawsuit. But never forget Liquidass, crowning achievement and example of Apple's downfall.

How sad; sorry about your demise, Apple. I'll miss who you once were.

There's a reason I only considered architectures to build @OS1337 against that are "obtainable" and I'll prioritize those that I have in my possession and that can be cheaply acquired, which as of writing are about 12 build targets across 5 distinct ISAs ( #i486 and up, #amd64, #ARMv5r11, #ARMv7, #ppc64) , with only 1 (#i486SX) being currently in focus and the next one being the #Pi0 / #Pi0W who's code will run (abeit not performant) on the #Pi0W2 as well...

• All 3 #PiZero|s can be had for like €100 in total with shipping and SD-Cards so it's on-par with a useable #amd64 machine like a #ThinClient with proper SSD and RAM...

Also unlike any other #SBC manufacturer @raspberry_pi / #RaspberryPi actually write proper #documentation and not just fart out some random bootable image file and tell users to feck off!

Given the open source nature of Open Firmware, I'm surprised features like USB boot capability haven't been backported to older New World Macs by the community.

I have no idea if current builds would fit on 1 MB ROM present in New World Macs, or how much headroom there is for deployment of a modern OFW ROM image for even more ambitious projects without resorting to hardware mods.

It's really depressing to see "good tech" get scrapped and sidelined (like #ppc64 / #ppc64le & #SPARCv9 as well as #mc68k) and abandoned.

To me #ARM64 is at best a "mixed bag" but I'd rather say it's a "fundamentally fucked up architecture" and I can't wait for good & auditable #RISCv to hit mainstream, even tho that'll take 10-25 years at minimum...

Still, that doesn't change the fact that in terms of documentation and support they ain't even in the same league as @Raspberry_Pi and that really is a big problem, because that's what made the #RaspberryPi so successful.

• Because there are cheaper AND more powerful options on the market but they don't get traction due to lack of good #documentation and #mainline support by the #Linux #kernel.

Remember:

• Operating Systems make Hardware.

That's why #Apple's #ARM64-v8.5A - based #SBCs are gamechangers and why #AMD64-based #PCs ain't dead like #ppc64 and #SPARCv9:

• Because at the end of the day, people don't give a damn about specs and stuff, all they care about is getting their "Compute Needs" fulfilled at a price- and painpoint they can accept...

Which is why I use #refurbished and #surplus'd and64-based #ThinClients instead of a #Pi5B for #Server work:

• They are cheap and they run basically all the stuff I care about.

OFC they won't replace big clusters at work but if your homelab has to run off German Energy Prices then you want a machine that barely sips power...

#SPARCv9 / #sparc64 - like #Power9(+) / #ppc64 - aren't per-se bad and a lot of it is used in #CriticalInfrastructure systems like the BAE #Rad750 & #esa #LEON...

Not to mention the fact that they - alongside #RISCv - are the only fully opensourced #ISAs with sufficient powerful designes fit for use cases beyond #IoT-Sensors and other "edge (embedded) computing" applications...

I've not gotten myself over to subscribing the #LKML since the amount of traffic there is just extreme...

But I'd love to see more supported architectures I can port @OS1337 to, and I'd ideally prioritize those long-term that have solid toolchain / compiler / userland support as I don't want to change any upstream code if possible and stick with fixed releases so that even decades later someone can rebuild such a system from scratch if need be...

keep in mind it's a tier 3 architecture, so don't expect perfection

the repo is now experimentally available (tier 3) on big endian #ppc64 #powerpc, for now outside the common infra (thanks @AdelieLinux for the compute resources necessary for the initial repo build, they were most helpful)

buildbot, isos, (maybe 32-bits too?) etc. coming soon

currently bootstrapping the system for #ppc64 (big endian)

minimum cpu is #powerpc 970 (G5); altivec required (this may change in longer term)

32-bit was tested but put on the back burner due to some toolchain issues (may be reevaluated later)
