• Decent #hardware that serves me rather than having rules baked in that stop me doing things (not possibly on most mobile handsets right now)
• Decent #software that serves me rather than doing the changing bidding of big-tech/ad-tech overlords

Apparently #macOS Finder cannot find files matching substring if folder is excluded from indexing. It sort of makes sense, but then again - colleagues act surprised when I do most file management from the terminal. It's due to these stupid limitations of UI applications.

Daunting…
After 15 years of #MacOs, I decided to move to Linux, and in a few weeks, also away from Mac hardware, currently 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD..

Any Don't_s or Do_s ? Maybe for Ubuntu specifically?

Is Linux/Ubuntu hogging less or more RAM than MacOS 10.13 High Sierra ?

In terminal scripts, awk or python often chew on large csv files for hours, days even, which can cause a kill -9 when running out of swap space.
So I reckon, for this reason alone, it'll have to be 24? or 32GB RAM this time, since the csv files won't be getting smaller, only larger.

Migrating apps and getting used to the new ones…ssoooo scary for my ageing mind 😭

Circumventing any and all Windows stuff on first boot – whaaaaaa!
No gaming reqs.

Memory management on #macOS is something else, and I can attest to that by doing literally the same freaking tasks and having the same workflow on both my #Apple Silicon #MacBook with just 8GB RAM and my #Linux PC with 32GB RAM - and the latter would go on a stroke while the former, just... absolutely nothing happens. Things keep going. Freaking bizarre.

I much prefer Linux obviously so the solution is to upgrade to 64GB of RAM, but who knows if that'll even be enough or I'd need to upgrade again to 128GB - maybe even switch out from a desktop to a whole freaking rack-mounted server ​:blobfoxcatterrified:​ I'm not even one of those chaotic people who never closes their tabs or apps and leaves evetg open on their desktop, etc. lol, I'm the opposite in fact, but alas, I'm just not a big fan of macOS if I've the choice.
