ah, very curious. well i did test climbing and conventional milling on my desktop #cnc extensively and it worked fully fine as long as i wouldnt cut too much material at once. interestingly, conventional was never as clean as climbing but still clean and i guess that made me mistakenly take the one for the other.

was just milling a piece flat and actually controlled the cnc manually and when climbing (now i know it really was climbing) to just mill 0.04mm away in a straight line, at the end of the material the mill got stuck on the last bit and instead of cutting it, it pulled itself along and the bit broke.

i think that is exactly what happened yesterday. kind of amazing that 0.04mm was too much for the not very rigid desktop cnc while it was doing 0.1mm the whole time very well.

Dear #lazyweb, I need to add analogue joystick control to my #python #CNC program in a way that can be fiddled with and replicated on multiple hardware platforms. The actual CNC bit I have under control. What python library/ies should I look at? Planning on using inexpensive generic gamepads with analogue sticks. Will NOT be using them to control a submersible.

Did anybody try yet to use #fusion360 or a less shitty program to do #CNC work on glass and lenses?

I carefully did try it a few months back on a microscope slide first with a carving tool, which suprizingly worked very well and also with a diamond dust? coated tip. you know these dremel polishing and sanding tools. That also worked pretty well and i was able to carve out a small rectangular chamber on the microscope slide.

What i want to do is to modify the shape of a #lens, specifically a zinc selenide lens for thermal imaging. While it is originally a co2 laser focusing lens it magnifies objects close by quite well but of course i want higher magnification and not pay a fortune for long IR lenses from thorlabs.

As i rather would like to not waste the two lenses i have for testing, i want to simulate first if the shape i want to make would actually work.

I obviously have no previous experience in designing lenses.

The axis are now mounted. This project just flooded me with dopamine initially, but with all the annoying problems i had, it got frustrating. I had trouble leveling and angling the axis correctly and the metal plates were a nightmare to drill holes for the screws. I had to obtain harder drills but this step was eventually a success. Next up is wiring the electronics

The scaffolding is ready, just like in the article, i found that the leftover metal chassis is perfect to be reused for this. I welded the vertical sheet using just a soldering tin with welding paste since i don't have a welding machine. It's a silly way to do it but it holds solid. Quick tip, use rubber bands to mark straight lines (see pic) when placing measurements.
