One thing about where I'm currently teaching, is that the students are given far too much homework, because the other teachers think that the more work the students put into something, the more they learn.
Which is not going to happen, since the students in this location only know how to memorise information, anything that is put into their brains is quickly discarded and leaves no connections to any already-learnt information.
Adding to the absurdity, most of the homework is mindlessly memorising vocabulary words.
Effectively the students are just given busy-work in the guise of learning. This forces the students to lose sleep and be unable to be active learners in the classroom. Which perpetuates the problem.
So, I've decided if a student needs sleep, then let them sleep. They won't be paying attention to the class anyway.
