There's a song about the assassination of "tourism minister" Zeevi that sometimes switches to a Sadaat speech, that works really well, but this is just weird. Ahmad Sadaat is a much less experienced speaker and sounds quite awkward, but it doesn't clash like Begin pop.

Israel – and particularly #Likud – have a complicated relationship with their Middle Eastern identity.

"Iraqi! Ashkenazi! Jews! Brothers! Warriors!" is a line from the most famous Likud speech, by the former Irgun command.

It is about a young man and a teenage boy who died in 1947 (in a way that cannot be described in detail on YouTube). The Iraqi was a #Kurdish immigrant, the Ashkenazi, and the other #Ashkenazi involved in that incident, were both born in Palestine

The former Irgun commander was making a speech praising Arab Jews (albeit not by that name) and that one Kurd who fought for the #Irgun and #Lehi

But when #Netanyahu made a speech about the same pair in 2010 both Arab Israeli and Sephardic #Knesset members heckled him.

I'm mostly going by the robot, my Hebrew skills only go as far as being able to read the names and Google bits that look dubious. I've read a few commentaries on it in English, and those confirm the strangest bits, but tell me if the robot got anything wrong.

He starts with condemnation of "terrorism" and he says it justifies preemptive strikes … then he praises his own time leading a group of what you could politely call a "violent non-state actors", including that time his Irgun blew up the King David Hotel.

The Irgun stopped being, "violent non-state actors" by all joining the IDF in 1948. As far as I can tell, the King David Hotel bombing is still the deadliest bombing by a non-state-actor in Palestine or Israel, thrice as many as anything Hamas ever did, but less than the IDF have done several times.

Begin's speech he ends with an Ashkenazi and an Iraqi Jew blowing themselves up together, this speech was before Arabs started doing that, so that bit probably came across differently in 1981? #Hezbollah started in about 1982 … the timing is weird, but the story of those two pretty much doesn't exist in Arabic, only Hebrew, English, and Kurdish.

Really calling Hamas "non-state actor" is a stretch, Palestine has two governments, both long over due for an election, but Hamas seemed somewhat more willing to have an election than Abbas was.

The Irgun and Transjordan

A poster of the Irgun Zvai Leumi (National Military Organization), “Irgun” for short, which began its terrorist campaign against the Palestinians in September 1937, and was the parent body of the "Stern Gang".

The Hebrew letters inside the square stand for “only thus" This way, as indicated by the map and the superimposed rifle, was the establishment of Israel by force on both banks of the Jordan River, ie., in Palestine and Transjordan. The date of the poster is ca. 1946.

The translated transcript says "only solution".

Irgun emblem: The map shows both Mandatory Palestine and the Emirate of Transjordan, which the Irgun claimed in its entirety for a future Jewish state. The acronym "Etzel" is written above the map, and "raq kach" ("only thus") is written below.
