Found this while metal detecting in the ocean in Hawaii. It was originally the size and shape of a D cell battery. It had a layer of grey material surrounding it and a darker layer on the outside of that. There was a small stainless steel screw that I lost while cleaning. I dropped it into a jar of muriatic acid and it bubbled vigorously for almost an hour before I pulled it out and rinsed with water. #metaldetecting #mysteriousitem#mystery#treasure

Speaking of reclaimed screws (and wood), what sort of metal detector do you use to make sure you don't ruin your sawblades on a forgotten screw or nail?

Thinking of getting a small handheld one which are around €30.

Any experience?

A barefooted person wearing a black long sleeved top and shorts using a metal detector on the beach after the storms. He's got another piece of equipment resting on his left shoulder (maybe a shovel?). He's not far from the long flight of stairs that lead down to the beach. This is in the aftermath of intense storms and heavy rain brought by an East Coast Low. The light sand of the beach has lots of dark stains. The waves have pushed dirty cream foam onto the beach and the water looks a tad grungy.

Found this lovely gold ring last weekend on my latest metal detecting adventure.

What are you up to?

I'm planning another one of my many fieldwork campaigns where I collaborate with the organised metal detector hobby. These lead on to papers in top scientific journals. But the local newspaper has its own ideas about what's important here:

"PRIVATE CITIZENS WILL BE ALLOWED TO SEARCH FOR GOLD USING METAL DETECTORS"

A friend who is a hobby metal detectorist asked if he could come and detect in our place. I laughed, saying he was welcome, but the thing would just beep continuously, everywhere.
