I have a raspberry pi running tiny services for a tiny user base and I just felt compelled to call it micro. Might call it tiny tho. It's a server so small it resides in the microclimate layer of the internet, like moss, in the boundary layer where the atmosphere touches the earth.
Thing is: I've still got my old HP Gen8 #microserver which, while limited to 16GB RAM, is more than powerful enough for what I want to do with it. I stopped using it because of the power draw of the Xeon CPU and 4x spinning disks, but if I'm looking at spending ~£300 on a new system, how long will it take me to realise £300 worth of power savings, even with our crazy UK leccy prices?

My HP N54L MicroServer with TrueNAS is about 14 years old. As are the HDDs in it. It'll happily do ~90 MB/sec transfers on my Gigabit network as much as I ask it to. Pretty awesome if you think about it.

Дошли наконец-то руки сделать персональный сервер бэкапов, который будет стоять не у меня дома. С этой мыслью я уже несколько лет хожу, делал несколько подходов, но вот наконец-то звёзды сошлись — у меня и железка под него образовалась, и дисков в достаточном количестве, и ОС наконец-то более-менее подобрал. В качестве железа выбрал старенький HP Microserver Gen7. Продавать большого смысла не видел, куда-то в продакшн ставить тоже — он почти на любой чих под 100% загружается, если какие-то сервисы вешать или просто в несколько потоков файлы по гигабитной сети копировать. А вот с простым хранением файлов он ещё справится.
Boot times are SLOW (fine if it's on all the time, but not great if you're maintaining it). It currently has no hardware transcoding, and adding it is a pain. I want to add another drive (plan is for 4x HDD in RAID10 and 2x SSD in RAID1), but I'll need an HBA. If you don't want to boot off one of the main four SATA ports (where my RAID10 is) you have to do this weird setup where you put the bootloader on a USB stick or microSD card and then point it to another drive...
In other non-Psion projects, I really need to get on with rebuilding my home server.
I'm pretty settled on giving #FreeBSD a go for the first time (although I might revisit #microOS). The question is the hardware.
I've had a Gen8 #Microserver since new. The case size is perfect. It's had various mods: fan and controller, Ivy Bridge CPU, Noctua CPU cooler, PicoPSU. The PicoPSU has really improved power consumption over the stock PSU. Having an iLO is really handy, too.
However, has its issues.
For those who're interested, perhaps @withaveeay and @david, my Fediverse server is a Linux container running on a quad-core Intel N100 micro-server (see picture).
It's running Proxmox VE, currently with 4 LXC containers (including a GoToSocial server and a mail relay) and a full VM which is just acting as a docker host for a single docker container.
It uses about 9.5W at the wall when idle, blipping to 10.5W, and 15W when maxed out. The processor has a 6W TDP. The fan is usually off, and only comes on after a prolonged period of stress (once the case gets hot, it tends to stay hot), and it's pretty much silent. It could use a bit less power, but for some reason I felt the need to put 32GB of RAM in it, which currently is about 28GB more than I actually need 🤣

Не смог пройти мимо бесплатного (чашка кофе), но неуправляемого, штатного свича.
Все ещё думаю, не поставить ли видюху для эмпирион галактик в кооперативе. Но надо будет через впс прокидывать, напрямую выставлять на общее обозрение не хочу. Второй вариант, это всунуть туда 410 райд контроллер он пошустрее штатного.

Ich möchte #openstack kennenlernen und versuche herauszufinden, mit welcher Hardware ich ein entsprechendes #homeserver Projekt starten könnte.
- #raspberrypi ist zuhauf vorhanden (aber zu schwachbrüstig?)
- ein paar alte #nuc und #hp #microserver ebenfalls.

I recently replaced my 10 year old HP #MicroServer Gen8 (Xeon E3-1230 V2) by a new "Gen10 v2 plus" (Xeon E-2314).
Similar performance, same power consumption.
Pro: more silent (probably due to new fans), could upgrade to 64GiB RAM now.
So, the "Gen10 v2 plus" (great name, btw.!) is not worth the money. (except if you are afraid, your current Gen8 might die of old age, soon).
Fuck! The health led on my #HP Proliant #Microserver is red 🟥
