#Missingno

@JacobPhD I mean, silly/cutsey names in scientific software have been around for a while, tho (remember the vegan R package?) that being said, that argument is not cool.

Here's a fun one: I am partially responsible for dozens of serious scientific papers invoking the name of a Pokémon glitch called #missingno. Back in 2013, I named a function missingno in my R package. Five years later, I am asked to peer review a Python package named 'missingno', whose name was inspired by my function: github.com/openjournals/joss-r

If you understand the significance of this gif you should check the 6th item in your inventory and probably schedule a colonoscopy.

Wherefore MISSINGNO?
It's another highly technical game glitch explanation, although from a source we don't often follow here: even though it has to do with explaining glitch Pokemon from the first generation of that series, it was the ending presentation of RustCon 2020 given by Siân Griffin, despite having little to do with Rust, other than

i'm still working on my 32kb gen2 battle sim, "picodex: dual version". and i finally finished the ui for the entire game! lemme know how you think it looks.

other progress: data packing is 100% done! sprites are maybe ~70% done. the battle system has been researched/planned, but only just started implementing it.

i've been working on this project for ~8 months, i only have free time early mornings or late nights when my toddler/job aren't distracting me. so progress is slow.. but i'm now on the tail-end of development and very excited to actually be implementing the complex battle system of gen2 pokemon. seriously, this is the most fun part.

Did you ever believe Mew could be found under the truck in Vermilion City? Or powerful Pokémon lurking behind Bill's house in his garden?

Back in January, Johto Times published a feature on the legacy of the PokéGods!

Missingno., and 'M or "Missing Number" were glitches that could be encountered in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow that had the potential to corrupt save files. It was closely associated with PokéGod rumours, suggested being a fourth legendary bird in the first generation of games.

Did you know that the first Pokémon games were full of fascinating errors in code, called glitches? Let’s have a look at how I personally got into them! ✨

#Missingno is particularly freaky because of its sprites. It would be one thing if its sprites were just the pixel mass, but the fact that it can also appear as a ghost or two skeletal Pokemon makes it incredibly eerie.
