It's amusing how the idea that "more" is inferior to everything else has stuck around 40 years after it was a useful one.
MORE, on MS-DOS/PC-DOS/DR-DOS, didn't go backwards; like very old Unix "more" didn't. "pg" was invented, which did.
"more" on AT&T Unix S5R4 definitely could go backwards, though. "more" was quickly made better. "pg" was eventually quietly dropped from the SUS in 2018.
This was unlike on DOS where MORE remained terrible for decades, even on DR-DOS, and one had to be a BBS user to download improved MORE utilities (that existed severalfold - I wrote a couple myself.).
There wasn't much reason to continue prefering "pg" over "more" on Unix, though, since at least 1988.
