But, without pleasing the left or the right, maybe Keir Starmer was aligned
with the views of people who do not identify with either side? That is the
argument made by Luke Tryl, who as director of More in Common UK
spends a lot of time in focus groups researching public opinion. He posted
these on Bluesky yesterday.

44 IMO, both Starmer’s recognition that migration is part of Britain’s national
story, and the warning that without more control “we risk becoming an island
of strangers, not a nation that walks forward together” does a pretty good job of
capturing where most Brits are on immigration.

worries, even in more liberal groups, that the pace/scale of immigration and

While living in China I took many photos of signs, as I love how culture works through in language.
When trying to communicate in foreign languages, I’m far from perfect… but we don’t need to be.
I like to play a little with words, as sometimes another language conveys more what I feel.
Language is a means of communication with people around the world and that makes life so interesting. We have much more in common than that which divides us <3

Just back from the hand carwash. It’s really just about the only place left that brings us all together. It’s all there, all of contemporary British society, from the Bentleys (yes) to the beaten-ups (mine). All ages, White retired in the Prius, Black graphic designery lady in the primary colour Mini, Ali entrepreneur-type in the swasticar with the personal plate, families in SUVs, roofers getting the van spruced for the week ahead. The humble hand carwash possibly creates more unity and utility than most other institutions left in this country.

And y’know what? These places are mostly run by the same Eastern Europeans against whom the UK turned when it lost its collective mind and left the EU.

Thank you to our Eastern European friends for not leaving us and creating the one place where we still come together 🇪🇺
