Protandrena (Anthemurgus) passiflorae (the passionflower bee) is a small (7.5-8.5 mm long) black bee that occurs from central Texas to North Carolina and north to Illinois.[1] Females of this solitary bee use collected nectar and pollen to feed larvae located in nests constructed in the ground (through mass provisioning). This uncommon bee is unusual for two reasons: first, the only known pollen host is a single species—the yellow passionflower (Passiflora lutea) (such specialization is called oligolecty); second, because of its size and foraging habits, the passionflower bee is thought to contribute little or nothing toward the pollination of its host plant.

Still obsessed with the cutest nesting strategy going. The Eastern Snail Shell Mason Bee (Osmia conjuncta) is a small North American blue bee which makes nests in suitable empty snail shells! In my linocut I show this adorable little pollinator with a Cepaea shell. Each print is 8” by 8” on delicate Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper.

A male Ceratina Bee is seen peering into a nest that’s being excavated by a female. The nest is in a stem of a Goatsbeard plant (Aruncus dioicus) 10mm in diameter.
On the sides of the stem, “jaw dust” flakes that the female is excavating is the pith of the plant. that she is removing. The final nest will be a tunnel running four to six inches long.
