I must admit my #interests are sometimes a bit weird. This year I'd like to visit the Raahe Museum because “Wanha Herra” ("Old Gentleman”) #diving suit is there. It is one of the oldest diving suits that still exists. It was donated to the #museum in the 1860s by #Captain Leufstadius. #history #oldthings #suomimastodon #finland

Saw this unexpectedly in freeway park!

It's a friendship bell, a gift from a Japanese newspaper in the 90s, if I remember the plaque correctly.

I love the idea of giving art as a gesture of friendship to distant people. It feels kind! This also intersects with the joy I have for parks.

I climbed up the ledge to ring it - it made a very satisfying dong 😄

I'm not that into Neolithic stuff. I mean I'll go and visit sites if they're nearby, or I can get there with an easy bus trip, or take a plane over to another island and walk up a muddy farm track in the rain, and across a wet paddock...

The Knap of Howar is a farm house and accompanying building on Papa Westray, one of the islands of Orkney. It's believed to have been built about 3800 BCE and, everything says, its the oldest extant stone house in NW Europe. Really, if you look at the oldest "buildings" in the world, most of them are tombs or burial mounds. As actual old building(site)s go, this little up in the top 3 or 4. Which is rather cool.

Also cool is that you can go inside and, when I was there, there was no one else there. Not even any birds. Just me* and the wind. Definitely one on the best sites I visited. (Sorry other wonderful places.)

*After leaving the airport, I saw only three people all day: a guy doing some welding, the lovely lady who offered a wet visitor a ride and a truck that turned off before it reached me. If you're not keen on crowds, Papa Westray is a good place to visit.

The middle section has a square in the floor edged by stone (hearth). In the furthest wall, a low doorway leads outside, towards the sea.

Day 17 #ArtAdventCalendar is another close up. I liked the textures and colours on this a lot. The wagon served it's purpose for many years, and is now retired and slowly reverting back to nature. I find images from these old pieces are always changing.

It is embedded in an old grey board, with more boards at the top and bottom of the photo. The boards and heavily weathered; there are rusted nail heads in larger holes where the wood has rotted away. Along the wood grain, you can see green and dark grey lichens running along to form many long left-to-right contour lines.
