The Eurasian Stone-curlew prefers dry, stony areas for nesting, relying on its mottled appearance to stay hidden from predators. It's mostly active at night, blending into its surroundings during the day. No wonder that most encounters with this species involve individuals fleeing or being observed from a great distance! It has a unique call heard during breeding season. Its diet includes insects, small mammals, and reptiles, hunted primarily at night.
A fun fact? Its nickname, "Dikkop," comes from the Afrikaans word meaning "thick head"and refers to the bird's large, round head and prominent eyes, which give it a somewhat comical appearance.

Eurasian Stone-curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus)—master of camouflage in dry, stony landscapes. Mostly nocturnal, rarely seen up close, but its eerie call reveals its presence at evening/night. Nicknamed "Dikkop" ("thick head") for its big round head and striking eyes.

Hallo meine lieben Lebensformen,

Hello my dear life forms,
the birds in the (semi-)desert and steppe areas are always wonderfully camouflaged. That's why I was so pleased to see this Eurasian Thick-knee (stone curlew) of a pair of Thick-knees (Burhinus oedicnemus insularum). I love them. The way they look with their big eyes. Wonderful.

I also finally saw Cream-colored Coursers, but unfortunately wasn't able to photograph them. But seen, at last.

Animals are friends, not food or a nuisance.
Stay healthy, happy and in love.

The most terrible pain in the soul is wanderlust.

Stone Curlew in the headlights - check out those giant eyes! 👀 caught this fella by surprise on our way home the other night, first sighting we had in our area ever! I whipped out my phone and took a couple of shots - not the greatest quality, but I’m chuffed that I managed to get a pic 🤠

A slender bird in brown and beige colors, with long legs, knobby knees, a short beak and big eyes adapted to its nocturnal lifestyle. It is caught in the headlights of a car and seems to be frozen in its stance… (and flew off a second after I took this photo)

Would a video of Stone-curlew help your Friday along? Of course it would. From yesterday's trip to #Wiltshire

I think you can see the evolutionary connection when looking at certain bird species more than others. For me, Stone-curlew fit into the 'more' category :)

A great day out in Wiltshire with two friends: 6 Stone-curlew, 27 Great Bustard, Corn Bunting, a male Hen Harrier, European Hare, Wheatear (at least 4), Red Kite, Buzzard and some good banter. Driving home was a bit of an adventure with the high winds and rain but with that list of birds, who cares?

#Dogwalking miscellany

To help with the challenge in the previous picture, here's a picture of a stone curlew making a newbie mistake. It has cleverly blended in with the grey-brown pattern of the aggregate footpath, but then foolishly stood in front of a brightly coloured advertisement for beer... Possibly it's stoned.

Stone curlew, with roses
New Farm Park

(I cheated a little, and removed the curlew's very obvious shadow. Just pretend it's an overcast day and play Spot The Curlew...)

A view of New Farm Park on a sunny day, with one of its many rose beds in the foreground. The soil below the roses is covered in weathered brown-grey bark, and a stone curlew is standing in a bare patch of the garden bed, almost indistinguishable from the bark, thanks to its striped and speckled grey-brown plumage.
