Want to make everyone else in your #OpenPlan office hate you? Be a group of 3-4 who have decided to all cluster around one person's computer to have a video call with someone. So that you need to speak out loud for the remote person to hear you, and you've got the computer's speakers up so you can all hear that person.

So that *all of us* can — and *must* — hear all of you.😠

Seriously. Get a room. One of those little rooms that are *just for this purpose*.

The Inter-University Seminar House in Hachioji, Tokyo, by Takamasa Yoshizaka, was completed in 1965. This iconic complex merges modernist principles with traditional Japanese aesthetics, creating a space that fosters academic exchange and collaboration.

80% of people are (like me) or . Traditional processes, offices and the need to comply with social expectations stop us gaining and retaining gainful employment. We are , by majority *choice*.

But valuing us only for our economic output, or adding "new skillsets" and " to a workplace" is not . It is dehumanizing.

I know I can be a pill about cube farms and open-plan offices. I admit: there is no one-size-fits-all solution for work.

I’m sure that open-plan offices have improved creativity and collaboration in many places, such as in the imaginations of executives who implement them.

Some schools in Aotearoa New Zealand are moving away from #OpenPlan classrooms. Fewer headaches, less distraction, more productivity. Will open plan offices and #HotDesking follow suit? Some workers in government agencies would be keen to have less noise and distraction too

Half the people around me: *Stand up and start talking with each other*

When my company moved us from private offices to an , they surveyed us about our workflow and needs. Then we discovered they’d already built out the space; the consultation process was a sham. This is common, as I write in . A major insight from , , and is that people should be meaningfully involved in designing their physical environment. scientificamerican.com/article

Would love to hear from scientists or other academics who currently work in large #openPlan offices with #hotdesking (+ only 70% of the desk space needed means lockers + absolutely no items left on desk overnight).

How do you make it work? The combination of focused work, close collaboration with some colleagues and lots of online meetings with externals?

What do I need to do now to prepare?

(Also open to job offers...)

Regards: a depressed scientist who has just seen the future #office.

Been having a rearrange. Even after 2 and a half years living alone it still feels weird not having to consult about what goes where #stuff #OpenPlan

@marie_ahoi thanks for the tag! I love your description. One of the few accounts I know of someone enjoying an #openPlan #OfficeDesign in academia. Is disruption / noise an issue at all? Where do people go who need to concentrate?

@fetch I found the page about the surprisingly distracting effect of any speech. The article is entitled "Quiet! I can't hear myself think" and is part of the "Research Notes" column. Scroll down to page 1216 of the following PDF:

J. Wilson, "Quiet! I can’t hear myself think", Electronics and Wireless World, no. 12, p. 1216, Dec. 1987 [Online]. Available: worldradiohistory.com/UK/Wirel…. [Accessed: Nov. 04, 2022]

It's worth reading. #distraction #openplan #concentration

First major study of employee behavior upon switching from conventional floor plan to #openfloorplan offices reveals a greater than two-thirds decline in face to face interaction, a more than 50% increase in electronic interaction, and a decline in productivity in the #openplan offices (specifics of the productivity decline were not shared by the companies under study)
