#Glyphosate-Based #Herbicides and Their Potential Impact on the #Microbiota of Social #Bees
by Juan P MuĂąoz, Diego Soto-JimĂŠnez, Anghel Brito, Claudio Quezada-Romegialli
Toxics. 2025 Jun 29;13(7):551.
Abstract
"Bee pollination is essential for terrestrial #ecosystems and crop production. However, the species richness of wild bees and other #pollinators has declined over the past 50 years, with some species experiencing dramatic decreases. A key factor in maintaining bee health is their #GutMicrobiota, which plays an essential role in digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, and resistance to pathogens. Disruptions to this microbiota can severely impact bee health, rendering them more susceptible to diseases and environmental stressors. Glyphosate, one of the most widely used herbicides, has been extensively studied for its effects on various organisms, with increasing evidence indicating its potential to disrupt bee microbiota. This review explores recent research on the effects of glyphosate and its formulations on the gut microbiota of #honeybees and #bumblebees. It examines species-specific responses, methodological approaches, and broader ecological implications. While evidence indicates that glyphosate can alter the gut microbiome in some bee species, its effects vary depending on exposure conditions, species, and the composition of microbial communities. Additionally, glyphosate formulations containing surfactants may exacerbate these effects. Given the endocrine-disrupting properties of glyphosate, further research is needed to understand the long-term consequences of exposure, especially its impact on hormonal regulation and bee resilience to #EnvironmentalStressors."

Highlights
⢠The risk of irritable bowel syndrome is higher in areas of high pesticide exposure.
⢠Agronomic criteria were used to categorize pesticide exposure in the study population.
⢠A total of 18,807 cases of irritable bowel syndrome were studied.
⢠Environmental pesticide exposure is linked to irritable bowel syndrome.
Abstract
The agricultural model in southern #Spain is highly productive, mainly due to the intensive cultivation under plastic. Despite strict pesticide regulation, human exposure to pesticides in the environment has been connected to an increase in diseases such as #CeliacDisease. Certain pesticides have also been associated to the disruption of the intestinal #microbiota, which has been xtied to the development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A case-control study was conducted in Andalusia, south #Spain, to assess the prevalence and risk of IBS related to pesticide exposure. This research found a high prevalence of IBS in #Andalusia between 2000 and 2021 in areas with high pesticide exposure using agronomic criteria. Furthermore, the odds ratio for IBS was significantly higher in the population with high pesticide exposure. This study suggests that pesticides may be involved in IBS, whereas more research is needed to determine the role of pesticides in IBS symptomatology.
Excerpts: "[In the locations of the study], the most commonly used insecticides are #organophosphates (primarily chlorpyrifos), N-methylcarbamates, macrocyclic lactones, #neonicotinoids, and pyrethroids. #Fungicides frequently used in plastic greenhouses include (di) thiocarbamates, conazoles, dicarboximide), anilino-pyrimidines, and copper salts. Bipyridyl (paraquat, diquat), organophosphonates (#glyphosate), chlorotriazine, and phenylurea are the herbicides most popularly used in the study areas (GarcĂa-GarcĂa et al., 2016)."
[...]
Studies on Rats
"A wide range of environmental pollutants, including heavy metals, insecticides, herbicides, and pesticides, can cause gut dysbiosis (Jin et al., 2015, Lin et al., 2020, Reygner et al., 2016). As suggested in our findings, there is also an increased risk of IBS precisely in pesticide-heavy areas and particularly in women. Previous research have found sexually dimorphic metabolic effect after pesticides exposures (Lukowicz et al., 2018). In this regard, #RoundupÂŽ, a glyphosate-based herbicide (#GBH) widely used in Andalusian crops, can increase the #Bacteroidetes group while decreasing the #Lactobacillaceae family in fecal samples of female rats (Lozano et al., 2018). Similarly, chronic glyphosate exposure reduces Corynebacterium, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Lactobacillus in mice following GBH administration (Aitbali et al., 2018). Exposure to fungicides such as imazalil can also alter the composition of the GM after acute and chronic administration. Specifically, in mice, imazalil increases the relative abundance of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria while decreasing the abundance of Bacteroidetes (Jin et al., 2016). Insecticides such as chlorpyrifos, diazinon and aldicarb also disrupt the GM of rats and mice (Aitbali et al., 2018, Gao et al., 2019, Gao et al., 2017, Joly et al., 2013). This modification has been associated with increased intestinal permeability and bacterial translocation in the case of chlorpyrifos (Condette et al., 2014). Diazinon inhibits several SCFA-producing genera in the Lachnospiraceae family, which operate as an energy substrate for colonic epithelial cells, altering energy harvesting in the intestinal epithelium (Gao et al., 2017)."

Chemical in #Roundup that causes brain damage found in common #cereals, new study finds
December 5, 2024 | Vivek Saxena
"Brief exposure to a weed killer found in breakfast cereals, oats, and orange juice has been shown to cause damage to the human body and brain.
"The weed killer, glyphosate (also known as Roundup), 'is the most widely used herbicide in the US,' according to the Center for Environmental Health.
" 'It is the most commonly used pesticide [#herbicide] in parks and is even found in foods that adults and kids love,' the center notes.
"Yet a new study conducted by Arizona State University researcher Ramon Velazquez and his team has found that active exposure to glyphosate 'can result in significant #BrainInflammation, and increase the risk of #neurodegenerative disease and #Alzheimerâs-like effects,' as reported by Arizona State University (#ASU).
" 'Our work contributes to the growing literature highlighting the brainâs vulnerability to glyphosate,' Velazquez said in a statement. 'Given the increasing incidence of #CognitiveDecline in the aging population, particularly in rural communities where exposure to glyphosate is more common due to large-scale #farming, there is an urgent need for more basic research on the effects of this herbicide.'
" 'My hope is that our work drives further investigation into the effects of glyphosate exposure, which may lead to a reexamination of its long-term safety and perhaps spark discussion about other prevalent toxins in our environment that may affect the brain,' additional study author Samantha Bartholomew added.
"The study involved testing both a high dose and low dose of glyphosate exposure on mice, with the lower dose being around the level thatâs found in common foods like cereal and orange juice. While the high dosage dose caused issues, so did the lower dose.
" '[The] lower dose still led to harmful effects in the brains of mice, even after exposure ceased for months,' according to ASU. 'While reports show that most Americans are exposed to glyphosate daily, these results show that even a short period could potentially cause neurological damage.'
"A previous study commissioned by #MomsAcrossAmerica in 2017 found that one of the most popular #OrangeJuices in America, #Tropicana, also contains glyphosate.
" 'The discovery of glyphosate residue in orange juice is unacceptable, especially since a branch of the World Health Organization designated glyphosate a probable #carcinogen two years ago, back in the spring of 2015,' Moms Across America founder Zen Honeycutt said in a statement at the time.
" 'The EPA has had ample time to revoke the license of this chemical and restrict its use in our food and beverage crops. As confirmed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, our children (who frequently drink orange juice for breakfast) are especially vulnerable to pesticides and measures should be taken immediately to protect them,' she added.
"What remains to be seen is how the upcoming Trump Environmental Protection Agency will deal with this." [We know how that went!!! More #EPAFails!]

From 2016 - #Glyphosate pesticide found in popular #Cereals
#CEHâs independent testing of a variety of American #cereals found many common brands of conventional products contained residue levels of the weed killer glyphosate. This toxic chemical has been shown to cause birth defects in laboratory animals and disrupt hormone function. Recently, the World Health Organization classified glyphosate as a âprobable human carcinogen.â
What is glyphosate?
Glyphosate, also known as Roundup, is the most widely used herbicide in the US. It is the most commonly used pesticide in parks and is even found in foods that adults and kids love.
Is glyphosate hazardous for kids?
Absolutely. The Guardian said it best: âBecause a childâs developing body is more sensitive to exposure than adults and takes in more of everything â relative to their size, children eat, breathe, and drink much more than adults â they are particularly vulnerable to these toxic chemicals.â (Source: The EU and Glyphosate: Itâs Time to Put Childrenâs Health Before Pesticides)
What foods are grown using glyphosate?
Corn and soybeans are commonly grown using Roundup, but is also used on hundreds of other crops. Glyphosate is sometimes used to dry out oats just prior to harvest.
What foods are contaminated with glyphosate?
The best way to avoid glyphosate is by knowing which foods contain it. Since oats can be prepared for harvest using the pesticide Roundup, oat cereals were the likely culprit.
CEH recently tested a variety of cereals and found glyphosate contamination in the following products:
Cereal Results:*
Beech-Nut Oatmeal (baby) 735 ppb
Beech-Nut Organic Oatmeal (baby) none detected
Cascadian Farms Organic Honey Nut Oâs none detected
Comforts Apple & Oatmeal with Cinnamon Baby Food Puree none detected
Gerber Single Grain Oatmeal (baby) 545 ppb

Quaker Life Original Multigrain Cereal (cereal) 1254 ppb
Quaker Oatmeal Squares with a hint of Brown Sugar (cereal) 2015 ppb
Signature Kitchens Honey Nut Toasted Oats 762 ppb
*These results are consistent with a U.S. Food and Drug Administration study of oatmeal (300 â 1670 ppb of glyphosate).
Other Results:
Enfamil Prosobee Soy For Sensitive Tummy Formula none detected
Gerber Graduate Cereal Bars Strawberry Banana 142 ppb
Nature Valley Soft Baked Oatmeal Squares Cinnamon Brown Sugar (bars) 39 ppb
Similac Soy Isomil For Fussiness & Gas Formula none detected
Up&Up Soy Infant Formula with Iron none detected
How concerned should I be about CEHâs test results?
Very concerned. The research into glyphosate exposure shows that these substances can alter and damage the delicate functions of our bodiesâ natural hormones, making them part of a group of chemicals known as endocrine disrupting chemicals, or EDCs.
Is it difficult to avoid glyphosate-contaminated food?
You can avoid this toxic chemical by buying organic cereals! Glyphosate is not used in the production of organic food. CEH recently tested two organic cereal products and neither were contaminated with glyphosate.
A more permanent solution is to get dangerous chemicals like glyphosate and other hormone disruptors banned. Add your name now.
What is the takeaway here?
Toxic glyphosate is avoidable in most cases. Whenever possible, buy organic cereals."

Breaking down the use of #glyphosate in the U.S.
by Pam Dempsey, #InvestigateMidwest May 26, 2019
"#Glyphosate is the most used #pesticide on U.S. agricultural crops, with the nation using an estimated 287 million pounds in 2016, according to an analysis by the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting.
"And sales continue to grow, with market researchers predicting the glyphosate market to grow to $8.5 billion to $10 billion annually by 2021 up from $5 billion now.
"Of 400 pesticides used on agriculture crops across the U.S, glyphosate is used at least three times more than all others, according to an analysis of data estimates from the U.S. Geological Survey.
"The second-most used weed killer in the U.S. is #atrazine â with 75.4 million pounds used on U.S. agriculture crops in 2016.
"In 2016, the #Midwest used 65 percent of the nationâs total agriculture glyphosate use on crops. The U.S. Census defines the Midwest as a 12-state area including: #Illinois, #Indiana, #Iowa, #Kansas, #Michigan, #Minnesota, #Missouri, #Nebraska, #NorthDakota, #Ohio, #SouthDakota, and #Wisconsin.
"All total â the Midwest used 188.7 million pounds of glyphosate on crops and cropland in 2016 â up from 4.6 million pounds in 1992."

#GMOCorn & #Glyphosate: New evidence for precaution from Mexican scientists
March 4, 2025
"Most #corn grown in the U.S. is #GeneticallyModified to tolerate the spraying of #glyphosate-based herbicides. These #herbicides are linked to cancer, endocrine disruption and other health concerns.
"#Mexico banned genetically modified (#GM) corn from use in tortillas in 2023. The #US challenged the policy as an unfair trade practice, claiming Mexicoâs precautionary policies were not based on science. In response, Mexicoâs national science agency compiled one of the most comprehensive and thorough reviews to date of current scientific evidence showing #HealthRisks associated with production and consumption of the most widely grown crop in the U.S.
"In this webinar, the former director of Mexicoâs National Council for Humanities, Science and Technology and the agencyâs lead researcher on the topic presented Mexicoâs recently released scientific review document. The evidence draws on recent literature to make the case that there are unacceptable health risks from GM corn and glyphosate for Mexican people who consume large quantities of minimally processed corn in food products such as tortillas.
"Dr. #ElenaĂlvarezBuylla, who directed the national science agency for six years, outlined the research carried out to underpin Mexicoâs 2023 decree to restrict the use of GM corn in tortillas and other minimally processed corn products, and to phase out the use of glyphosate.
"Erica Hagman Aguilar presented the key findings from the well-referenced 200-page science dossier, which was recently translated into English.
"This webinar was moderated by researcher and writer Timothy A. Wise.
"The discussion was co-hosted with #USRightToKnow, a nonprofit public health research group. It was presented with simultaneous English/Spanish interpretation. "

Not surprising...
#Trump DOJ Sides With #Roundup Manufacturer Over #Cancer Victims in Supreme Court Case
An attorney at Food & Water Watch said the DOJ sent a âclear message... to sick Americans harmed by toxic pesticides: Trump has Bayerâs back, not theirs.â
by Stephen Prager, Dec 02, 2025
"The Trump administration is pushing for the US Supreme Court to shield the manufacturer of Roundup from thousands of state lawsuits alleging that its widely used herbicide product causes cancer.
"On Monday, US Solicitor General D. John Sauer recommended that the high court agree to hear a challenge to a Missouri juryâs verdict in 2023 that awarded $1.25 million to a man named #JohnDurnell, who claimed that the product caused him to develop #NonHodgkinLymphoma.
"Bayer, the agribusiness giant that purchased the manufacturer of Roundup, the #Agribusiness giant #Monsanto, in 2018, immediately challenged the verdict.
"In 2015, the World Health Organizationâs International Agency for Research on Cancer (#IARC) classified glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, as 'probably #carcinogenic to humans' based on 'limited evidence.'
"That evidence became less limited in 2019, when a prominent meta-analysis by a team of environmental health researchers found that people exposed to glyphosate at the highest levels had a 41% higher risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma than those who werenât.
"There are nearly 4,500 Roundup claims currently pending in federal court, and at least 24 cases have gone to trial since October 2023. They make up just a fraction of the more than 170,000 claims filed.
"According to Bloomberg, Bayer has already been forced to pay out more than $10 billion in verdicts and settlements over the product, which has caused a massive drain on the companyâs stock price.
"In what it said was an effort to 'manage litigation risk and not because of any safety concerns,' Bayer removed glyphosate-based #herbicides from the residential market in 2023 [BUT NOT THE COMMERCIAL MARKET], switching to formulas that 'rely on alternative active ingredients.' [I wonder what environmental damage those do!]
"That didnât stop the lawsuits from coming. Durnellâs victory was the first successful case brought against Bayer outside California, the only state that labels the product as carcinogenic. That in Missouri opened the floodgates in other states, and plaintiffs subsequently won sizable payouts in Georgia and Pennsylvania.
"But now the Trump administration is trying to help the company skirt further accountability. Sauer, who is tasked with arguing for the government in nearly every Supreme Court case, filed a 24-page brief stating that there is a lack of clarity on whether states have the authority to determine whether Bayer and Monsanto violated the law by failing to warn customers about potential cancer risks from Roundup.
"Bayer argues that these cases are preempted by the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (#FIFRA), which forbids states from enacting labeling requirements more stringent than those recommended by the federal government. [WELL WHAT CAN WE DO WHEN OUR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DOESN'T DO ITS JOB?!!]
"Sauer agreed with Bayer, stating in the brief that the US Environmental Protection Agency 'has repeatedly determined that glyphosate is not likely to be carcinogenic in humans, and the agency has repeatedly approved Roundup labels that did not contain cancer warnings.'
"In 2016 and again in 2020, the EPA indeed classified glyphosate as 'not likely to be carcinogenic to humans' following agency assessments. However, in 2022, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals voided this assessment, finding that the agency applied 'inconsistent reasoningâ in its review of the science.' " [Imagine that! The EPA fails us again!!!]

LIVING NOW, PLANNING LATER: LESSONS FROM DIE WITH ZERO
I recently finished reading Die With Zero by Bill Perkins. The central idea is that the only guaranteed moment is the one you are living in right now, so the real question becomes: how do you maximize life, experiences, and finances in a way that still leaves your future self-supported?
It is a provocative idea because the tension between enjoying the present and preparing for the future is real and constant.
Over time, Iâve learned that for me, balance begins with understanding who you are, where you are, what you value, and how those values show up in your financial choices. When those pieces are unclear, any system, even the good ones, starts to crumble.
1. One Personâs Meat Is Another Personâs Poison
Many of us grow up in environments that blend shame, guilt, and unspoken expectations. These forces shape our relationship with money long before we ever earn a paycheque. When the messages around us tell us what we should want, how we should behave, or what a âresponsible adultâ spends on, it becomes difficult to know what we genuinely like, want, or value. This disconnection breaks our internal compass, leading to misalignment and autopilot habits we would never choose intentionally.
The first step in creating balance is naming without shame what a good life looks like for you. Not the version you think you should want, or the version your family, friends, or social media celebrate, but the one that fits your actual personality and priorities. The next step is accepting the cost of that vision.
Every meaningful life has a cost, financial or otherwise. When you accept those costs, you reduce the likelihood of reaching the end of life filled with regret about the things you never allowed yourself to do.
Ideally, you should look at your bank statement and clearly see your values reflected. Instead, many of us spend and save unintentionally. We follow generic financial scriptsâsave a million dollars, retire at sixty-five, invest aggressively, deny yourself now and reward yourself laterâwithout pausing to evaluate whether those goals align with the life we want.
Consider:
⢠How would I live if I had one day left? One month? One year? Twenty years?
Your answers will shift, and the shifts matter.
⢠What spending brings guilt or shame?
⢠Does that feeling come from misalignment with your own goals, or from messages inherited from others?
⢠What trade-offs am I making when I choose to save, spend, or prioritize something?
Your honest answers shape your financial behavior more than anything else.
2. Know your numbers (without obsessing)
My sister once walked into the bank because every month her credit card bill shocked her. She was convinced some digital creature was secretly siphoning her money. The bank representative pulled up her statements, and she was forced to confirm that, yes, she had authorized every single purchase.
She did not even feel guilty about how she spentâshe simply was not in control. Many of those purchases were not intentional, so she did not enjoy them.
You need to know where your money goes, but it does not need to be complicated. Start with the basics. List your fixed costs: rent, groceries, insurance, debt payments. Then estimate your variable costs: entertainment, dining, and hobbies.
Pull three to six months of bank and credit card statements and find your averages. This gives you a realistic baseline for what ânormalâ looks like.
You do not need to track every cent. Once you understand your baseline, you can make calmer and more informed decisions.
3. There are seasons
A major takeaway from Die with Zero is the idea of time buckets, recognizing that life has seasons and each season allows for different types of experiences. As you age, your energy, health, and interests shift. I still enjoy traveling, but the idea of shared bathrooms and cold meals now feels miserable. In my twenties, I tolerated it easily, sometimes even enjoyed it. Instead of traveling frugally with friends during that season, I spent much of that time working toward money goals that ultimately felt hollow.
Money only matters when itâs connected to a purpose. For me, that purpose now includes being in community, helping my family, and making art I love.
If your income barely covers essentials, your priority might be building breathing room, a small emergency fund, paying off a high-interest debt, or creating a side stream of income. If you already have savings, then the question becomes whether your spending aligns with your actual goals or whether itâs driven by fear or habit.
Instead of a lifelong bucket list, create decade lists: experiences and goals for your twenties, thirties, forties, and beyond. This brings clarity and makes financial decisions more meaningful.
4. Time is an important ingredient
This is where my perspective diverges slightly from Perkins. He describes a friend who borrows money to travel in his twenties. Perkins argues that âborrowing from your future selfâ can enhance early adulthood if the debt is modest and not high interest.
I understand the logic, but my bias is different: for nonessential expenses, if you cannot afford something, you should generally avoid borrowing to make it happen.
Many people already struggle with debt and low savings, and catching up later becomes unrealistic. Time itself is powerful. The earlier you start saving or investing, the less you have to contribute because compounding does most of the work.
For example, someone who saves $200 per month from age 25 to 35 and then stops can end up with more at retirement than someone who starts at thirty-five and saves until 65. Time multiplies effort in a way nothing else can.
5. Once you set your intention, automate it
James Clearâs Atomic Habits emphasizes removing friction. If your goal is to save, automate your transfers so money moves into savings or investments before you can touch it. Automation protects you from indecision, forgetfulness and emotional decision-making. You donât need to check accounts constantly or react to every market dip. Review your plan once or twice a year, or when major life changes occur, but avoid endless tinkering. Consistency, not perfection, is what makes the difference.
6. Make space for joy
The goal is not money itself but what money allows: time with family, meaningful experiences, generosity, creativity or peace. Plan joy with the same seriousness you plan savings. Budget for dinner, the trip, the celebration. Remove the guilt and the outside opinions. You can live in the present and prepare for the future if you define what âenoughâ looks like for both.
