It already exists, long since. But it's only available on SIP 'phones. Loop-disconnect signalling doesn't have the protocol for sending the data.

But on a SIP call the SBC can do what is known as a CNAM lookup when a call comes in, and fill in the initial INVITE with 15 characters of looked up information about the caller. There are various people/companies providing/selling CNAM lookup service.

If your 'phone company has switched over your landline to digital, this information (assuming that TPC's equipment is indeed doing the requisite CNAM lookups, which it possibly still isn't for residential subscribers) is now getting as far as a plastic box in your house and being thrown away there; because whilst it is now VoIP to that plastic box, there's no protocol for sending names from that plastic box over the RJ11/BT connectors and 2 wires to your 'phone. Caller ID is sent over that very last leg using DTMF.

@paavi @kurth @John_Loader @amiserabilist @MAJ1 @kibcol1049 actually fmr. GDR until the completion of #HyTNAS (digitalization of the German #PSTN based off #ISDN + #ADSL Annex B from the first outdoor switch onwards!) there were even some 1920s mechanical dialing systems still in use.

• Needless to say it was considered "worse than a fully destroyed modern network" because it was stuck on pre-1939 capacity.

Well, that's the end of a very long era. Not that I could use it if I wanted to as my land line is long gone.

Now some folks may say: "Why don't you just get a regular-ass #AUI like a #NormalPerson?"

1. Simply because noone but the most tech-masochistic folks want to deal with like #coax cables, #VampireTaps, huge #MAUI boxes and rare vintage stuff + overhead to get a slow & underwhelming network experience. Pretty shure neither @ncommander nor @TechTangents would either.

2. The few late-era #10BaseT-based AUIs do exist but they are long out of production and thus quite expensive. And if you are on #10Base2 or even #10Base5 good luck finding a still working #switch that isn't sold by a #scalper like #ersazza way above #MSRP+#inflation!

3 An AUI is just an Interface port / media converter similar to #SFP & GBIC and necessitates a NIC already inside the machine.

4. AUIs are not just long outdated but also way more inflexible, whereas basically anything from an #Apple2 up to the latest #Android-#Tablet can be adapted cheaply to do #RS232 #serial and send AT commands to a #Modem.

5. Twisted-Pair Ethernet is cheap, commonplace and still supported and pretty much forwards- and backwards compatible. 10BaseT will run on Cat.3 but also on Cat.5 and even Cat.8 cables (In case one wants to hookup a vintage computer on a 40GBase-T port for no reason but to see if the switch does negotiate proper 10Base-T.

• Shit, that reminds me that some folks just recently got themselves some #4G06 & #4G07 units because they needed a cheap #VoLTE - #FWT to hookup seniors' landline phones on because it's cheaper to migrate to #sipgate / #simquadrat than having to swallow a forced migration from #AnnexB - based #PSTN (#HyTNAS) to shitty and overpriced #VDSL!

I came to a realisation that I'd make regular phone calls more in general and favour calls over e-mail and online support requests if the support for #HDVoice #EVS was more universal.

I find it hard to understand people on regular phone calls because it sounds very muffled, and it's bizarre how to this day we're stuck with a low sampling rate and quality on regular calls. Even on mobile, different carriers often don't cooperate and don't support HD Voice between themselves.

I tried to call one of my doctors today, and my #Android phone told me "Server Unreachable".

What? What server is a telephone using to dial another telephone over the #PSTN? I checked my VPN, working fine. My IP connectivity was also fine.

Turns out one digit of the number was wrong.

Why the badword would the message not say, "Phone number is not assigned" or some other, you know, useful #ErrorMessage?

Das wird bei uns nicht passieren, da man bei Leuten in einem Produktionswerk heute einfach tragbare Telefone braucht. Aktuell ist das für die Produktionsebene noch das #DECT #Telefon . Auf Dauer wird man keine zwei #drahtlos #Netzwerke für #Telefonie haben wollen.
Deswegen #Teams , das es auch auf dem #handy gibt und mit dem man auch gegen eine kleine Gebühr ins #PSTN telefonieren kann.
