Graves amenazas a periodistas persisten en América

La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) advirtió sobre un deterioro sostenido en la libertad de prensa en América. La delegación sostuvo reuniones clave con la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA).
Durante su visita a Washington D. C., los representantes de la SIP señalaron los riesgos crecientes que enfrentan periodistas en la región. Entre ellos resaltaron la persecución, violencia, censura y exilio forzado.
José Roberto Dutriz, presidente de la SIP, encabezó la comitiva junto con figuras como Roberto Rock, Michael Greenspon, Martha Ramos, Juan Lorenzo Holmann y Carlos Lauría.
Reunión con la OEA
El secretario general de la OEA, Albert Ramdin, recibió a la delegación y escuchó las preocupaciones presentadas. El encuentro permitió un análisis conjunto de los desafíos que amenazan la libertad informativa. Los voceros de la SIP revelaron cifras alarmantes sobre la represión contra medios y periodistas. Afirmaron que los ataques provienen de gobiernos autoritarios, crimen organizado y actores judiciales.
La situación, indicaron, ha escalado en número y gravedad, con mayor presencia geográfica. También lamentaron la carencia de medidas efectivas de protección y el alto nivel de impunidad. Advirtieron que la polarización política y la intolerancia institucional han deteriorado el Estado de derecho. Todo ello ha creado un entorno hostil contra el periodismo libre y profesional.
Compromiso de la OEA
Albert Ramdin, originario de Surinam, reconoció la gravedad de los retos expuestos por la SIP. Afirmó que su gestión al frente del organismo busca abrir espacios de diálogo incluyente. Indicó que la violencia, la polarización y la pérdida de prosperidad sólo pueden resolverse con cooperación y voluntad. Añadió que se requieren acuerdos sobre principios compartidos entre los sectores sociales.
Ramdin subrayó que promoverá acciones colectivas para restaurar la paz y la confianza democrática en el continente. Explicó que sin instituciones sólidas, el ejercicio periodístico sigue en riesgo. La reunión se realizó poco después de que la SIP firmara un convenio con la Comisión Interamericana de Mujeres (CIM). Este acuerdo busca fomentar la equidad de género y la diversidad en el periodismo.
Encuentro con Laura Gil
Más tarde, los representantes se reunieron con la secretaria general adjunta de la OEA, Laura Gil. Conversaron sobre la situación estructural de la prensa y la implementación del nuevo acuerdo. Entre los temas abordados figuraron la seguridad laboral para comunicadores y la visibilización de mujeres periodistas. También discutieron propuestas de formación y cooperación en el ámbito regional.
La SIP reiteró la necesidad de garantizar condiciones dignas para el ejercicio del periodismo en todos los países. Subrayó que sin respeto a la labor informativa, la democracia se debilita. Los representantes agradecieron la disposición de la OEA para sumar esfuerzos institucionales. Coincidieron en que los retos sólo pueden enfrentarse con alianzas estratégicas.
Defensa de la libertad de expresión
La delegación calificó como constructivo el diálogo con los órganos regionales. Reafirmó su compromiso con los valores democráticos y los derechos humanos en el continente. La SIP señaló que continuará promoviendo la libertad de prensa como un derecho fundamental. Resaltó que su labor incluye monitoreo constante y denuncia pública de agresiones.
Además, se comprometió a colaborar con actores internacionales para proteger a los comunicadores en riesgo. Manifestó que sin acceso a información veraz, la ciudadanía no puede ejercer sus derechos. Finalmente, subrayaron que la lucha por las libertades fundamentales no puede postergarse. Alertaron que las amenazas aumentan si no se actúa con firmeza y coordinación. –sn–
