9 Tax Deductions Middle Class Retirees Shouldn’t Miss in 2026 – AOL
9 Tax Deductions Middle Class Retirees Shouldn’t Miss in 2026
By Stacy Garrels, Sun, January 25, 2026 at 9:08 AM PST
From article…Tax season can feel a lot different once you’ve retired. You’re no longer tracking multiple W-2s or trying to squeeze in last-minute business expenses, but that doesn’t mean your taxes automatically get any easier.
Many middle-class retirees navigate multiple income sources, pay rising Medicare premiums, and assume certain deductions no longer apply once they stop working full-time.
Yet some of the most valuable tax breaks available in retirement are either new, misunderstood, or commonly overlooked. You can avoid retirement mistakes by keeping these key tax deductions on your radar for 2026.
Find Out: 14 benefits seniors are entitled to but often forget to claim
1. New senior deduction for those 65+
If you’re 65 or older, a new temporary senior deduction may reduce your taxable income. For retirees within certain income brackets, this deduction allows you to exclude up to $6,000 from taxable income between 2025 and 2028.
This deduction is separate from the standard deduction, which means eligible retirees could further lower their taxable income without having to itemize. Although not all income levels will qualify, it’s a meaningful benefit that’s worth checking into before you file.

2. Using HSA funds for Medicare premiums
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) don’t lose their value once you retire. If you’ve built up an HSA balance, you can continue using those funds tax-free for qualified medical expenses, which include your Medicare premiums.
Part B premiums alone can run over $200 a month for most retirees. Paying those costs from an HSA instead of taxable income can stretch your retirement dollars further and reduce overall tax burden.
3. Family gifting within annual limits
Most retirees won’t face the federal estate tax, but gifting rules can still play a role in tax planning for you and your loved ones. Each year, you can give up to the annual gift exclusion amount to as many people as you want without triggering gift taxes or filing additional paperwork.

I’ve visited Las Vegas several times — the best part of every trip is less than an hour outside the city

Erin hiking with her sister on her fourth trip. Erin Sanchez“One time is enough.”
That’s what I’d heard countless times about visiting Las Vegas before making the trip myself. I’d always wanted to go, if only to have that once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Turns out, one time wasn’t enough. I’ve been five times now, and I have no doubt there will be a sixth. The nightlife and gambling aren’t what keep me coming back, though.
These days, I skip the casinos and explore nature instead — and one of my favorite places is about 45 minutes outside the city: Valley of Fire State Park.
There was no turning back once I found a side of Vegas I didn’t know I was missing
Atlatl Rock. Erin SanchezIn 2013, I went to Vegas to celebrate surviving grad school with a couple of friends.
Being first-timers, we wanted to see everything the Las Vegas Strip had to offer. About 28,000 steps and a midday shoe change later, we felt we’d seen all we could in a single day.
That first trip was a whirlwind of neon lights and shirtless men dancing on tabletops (they don’t call it “Sin City” for nothing). It was fun, but I wondered if there was even more to experience in the area beyond the sensory overload of the Strip.
Flying into Las Vegas from Seattle, I’d noticed the rugged, desert mountains surrounding the city. Those same mountain ranges also caught my eye from the mayhem of the Strip.
A couple of years later, when I returned to the city with my husband, I’d finally get to see them up close.
Valley of Fire State Park looks otherworldly. Erin SanchezAfter a day on the Strip, the two of us decided to get out of the city and visit the Valley of Fire. We didn’t know much about the park, but the impressive Google images and proximity were enough to convince us to check it out.
We rented a car, then headed northeast of Las Vegas and found ourselves in a sea of sand and rocky red outcroppings within an hour.

Before those purchases, they bought several companies that had to do with time tracking, invoicing, expense tracking, time-based reporting, etc.

Back in 1993, I went to get another degree to just to get internet access, which was one of the few ways to get it back then. We had VAX and Unix, both fine platforms, hundreds of students would log in to one CPU from a terminal on campus or the house. We were connected to the world and communications were fast. I remember that's when the entire continent of Australia was connected by a pair of 2MB cables at the time. We had many distributed servers for news, email, IRC, gopher, etc, but it was lightning fast. Engineers at companies put tech documents on ftp servers. The internet was a big world library and the world was free. #JavaScript wasn't invented yet to slow us down or bury us in popups and advertisements. The entire internet was ad-free and advertising was a ban offense.
Then one morning I remember what would be known as #EternalSeptember, thanks to #AOL. And the #CanterSiegel spam happened. And the real cranks invaded. Many of us banned every .com address to regain sanity. This is when investors invaded the internet to hype it up into television quality. At least we still have #Wikipedia, #InternetArchive, and #Mastodon. Watching #Bluesky open up the floodgates to fascists was obvious to those of us who remember the past.
¡¿ #AOL cobra por #SoporteTécnico?! :confusedny: :excuseme:

How Does the American Dream Differ by Generation? – AOL.com

By Alan Joseph, Sun, January 4, 2026 at 10:04 AM PST
If you asked your grandparents what the American Dream meant, they might opine on the classic tale of hard work leading to homeownership with the white picket fence, perhaps in a quiet neighborhood where everyone knew each other.
But your parents may have a different view. They may focus on the relief and peace of mind that comes with paying off their mortgage.
For young people today, the American Dream feels increasingly out of reach. While they still value traditional milestones, rising costs and an ever-changing economic landscape have made some give up on the idea of chasing the American Dream.
What is the American Dream?
“The American Dream” was coined 94 years ago by James Truslow Adams, according to the Library of Congress. Nearly a century later, the concept is still as relevant as ever. Despite the mutability of the term and how different generations perceive it, the broad assumption about the American Dream essentially boils down to upward economic mobility: If people work hard, success is within reach.

What Young People Feel About the American Dream
A UCLA study from this year found that 60% of Gen Zers believe attaining the American Dream on their own would be difficult due to economic barriers. For Gen Z, the American Dream means good mental and physical health, personal fulfillment and financial success. Yet, 74% believe it’s harder to be happy now compared to previous generations, with financial stress being the biggest reason.
This sentiment should not be dismissed, as it raises important, broader questions about the nation’s long-term outlook.
If upcoming generations lose faith in their country’s institutions or in the long-held belief that hard work leads to financial stability, the social contract at some point will begin to erode.
But not all hope is lost, according to an expert whom GOBankingRates spoke with.
Rethinking the Dream
To investigate how young people can regain a sense of control and become financially secure, GOBankingRates spoke with Robert R. Johnson, CFA, and professor of finance at Creighton University.
Johnson warns young people not to lament over the American Dream, which he believes is an amorphous concept that has evolved. Instead of chasing antiquated goalposts, Johnson maintains that young people can, in fact, achieve financial security.
One timeless strategy, Johnson said, is investing in the stock market through low-cost, highly diversified index funds. He believes this is a better alternative to investing in real estate, which he said carries “large financial risks,” by exposing investors to an “undiversified, indivisible and often illiquid asset.”
Johnson also emphasized the importance of taking advantage of tax incentives through 401(k) plans and IRAs. Learning how to use these accounts effectively can help young people grow their investments more efficiently while benefiting from potential employer matches.
Key Takeaways
The American Dream has shifted across three generations. What emerges from Johnson’s insight is that upward economic mobility is still attainable — but through modern strategies.
