_The Evening Post_, 2 April 1925:
NEW PAVILION
Though those who had hoped that the new Basin Reserve pavilion might have been available to the public and sports bodies during the summer now ending have been disappointed, winter sports people may look forward fairly confidently to the benefits of an up-to-date pavilion during the coming session for the work is now very well advanced and may be completed within a couple of months. Latterly efforts have been concentrated upon the completion of interior work, but the pavilion will be topped off during the next two or three weeks by the covering of the steel roof girders, a fairly big job, but a straight ahead one.
Plans are already tentatively prepared for further improvements to the Basin, including the terracing of the slopes to the north and south of the pavilion, thus affording very considerable open-air stand accommodation, and the setting back of the western boundary line of the playing area proper to give a broad sweep in place of the present straight line.

All(zone) chosen to design MPavilion 2022 in Melbourne

Bangkok architecture studio All(zone) has been revealed as the next practice to design Melbourne's MPavilion, an annual architecture commission similar to London's Serpentine Pavilion.

All(zone) will become the ninth designer to create a pavilion for the prestigious annual commission, following designs by Australian architect Glenn Murcutt and Spanish architect Carme Pinós.

The pavilion will be installed in the Queen Victoria Gardens in Melbourne in November and will be used as the venue for events, talks, workshops and performances.

Bangkok-based architecture studio All(zone) will become the ninth designer of the pavilion

All(zone), which is led by Rachaporn Choochuey, is best known for designing Thailand's first contemporary art museum – the MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum in Chiang Mai.

According to the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, which funds the MPavilion, the studio was chosen for its focus on sustainability and commitment to using local materials to construct its projects.

Businesswoman and philanthropist Naomi Milgrom, founder of the foundation, said that the practice "demonstrates how architecture and design can contribute to creating sustainable cities".

All(zone) designed the MAIIAM contemporary art museum in Thailand

"Rachaporn's architectural approach to 'the art of living lightly' and creating spaces with people and the environment at the heart of her practice demonstrates how architecture and design can contribute to creating sustainable, equitable cities," said Milgrom.

"With their commitment to designing built environments where people can feel at home in the world, All(zone) are known for their lively projects which reuse and recycle local materials in bold and innovative new ways."

Glenn Murcutt unveils minimal MPavilion topped with linear "lantern" roof

A different architect is selected to design the MPavilion every year. Pritzker Archietcture Prize-winning architect Murcutt constructed a minimal pavilion underneath a linear "lantern" roof in 2019.

As with previous MPavilions, Murcutt's has since been relocated to a permanent location in Melbourne.

All(zone)'s pavilion is scheduled to open to the public on 17 November 2022 and will be relocated to a permanent home in the city after the summer installation.

The first MPavilion was created in 2014 by another Australian architect, Melbourne-based Sean Godsell. Since then it has been designed by British architect Amanda Levete, Indian practice Studio Mumbai and Dutch studio OMA.

Oscar Niemeyer's final building opens in French vineyard

A pavilion designed by the late Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer has opened at the Château La Coste vineyard in southern France.

Designed in 2010, two years before Niemeyer's death aged 104, the curved white pavilion was created to sit comfortably within the landscape.

Oscar Niemeyer's final project has been completed

"The location is very beautiful and a pleasant, peaceful environment," said Niemeyer while designing the project.

"The pavilion had to be a light construction adapted to the landscape as well as the vegetation. The structure is at home in this setting and will be a joy to walk around."

The pavilion is located in a French vineyard

Surrounded by vineyards, the pavilion consists of two distinct elements – a glass-walled gallery space and a cylindrical auditorium.

A pool alongside the pavilion was designed to reflect its form.

A reflecting pool is placed next to the pavilion

"The pavilion, with its organic, curved architecture reflects Niemeyer's distinctive style and sits in perfect harmony with the surrounding vines and rolling Provençal hills," according to Château La Coste.

"The striking glass facade gives the impression of the vineyard unfolding through the building, while the shallow pool at the entrance beautifully captures the interaction of light and reflection."

A glass-walled gallery is positioned next to an enclosed auditorium

The 380-square-metre gallery space is surrounded on all sides by glass walls, with views across the surrounding vineyards.

Alongside it, the fully enclosed 140-square-metre auditorium has seats for 80 people.

It is surrounded by vineyards

Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning Niemeyer is one of the 20th century's most celebrated architects. He is best known for his design of Brazil's capital Brasília as well as the headquarters of the United Nations in New York.

The pavilion is one of the numerous buildings designed by Niemeyer in France where he lived for almost 20 years.

"Niemeyer had a long and faithful relationship with France. During the Brazilian military dictatorship, he went into exile in Paris and lived on Boulevard Raspail," added Château La Coste.

"Even after returning to Rio de Janeiro, he always said that he would only leave his home city for Paris," it continued.

"Over his lifetime Niemeyer developed several projects in France, among them: the Communist Party HQ, L'Humanité newspaper HQ, the Cultural Center in Le Havre, the Labor Council Building of Bobigny and a private home in St Tropez."

The gallery is almost entirely white

Niemeyer's building is the latest pavilion designed by a Pritzker Architecture Prize winner at the Château La Coste vineyard. It joins Richard Rogers' final project, a cantilevered gallery that was revealed last year, as well as buildings by fellow Pritzker Prize-winners Tadao Ando, Jean Nouvel and Renzo Piano and Frank Gehry's 2008 Serpentine Pavilion.
