Comics poet John Burgess recently assembled a fascinating collection of interpretations of #Basho's famous #haiku, and put out the call for #PoetryComics versions of it as well. That spurred me to clean up my version, and here it is! I've linked to John's website in my (public) Patreon post for this #comic — check it out, his post is a fascinating read:

Two stacked images of the same illustration, which is the cover art for a book identified in elegant text near the center of the image: "First Flight by Akire Bubar". The full illustration in front is smaller & brighter, and shows a joyful crow on the right leaping into flight, with wings spread wide, from a nest at the bottom left. Inside the nest is what looks like an egg at first glance, but is actually the earth. The nest sits in the crook of a scraggly branch which is bare except for a few leaves. There is a small gear from a clock in the nest with the earth, and another gear stuck on one of the tips of the branch. Above the nest, a tiny surgical mask is snagged on the branch above. All of this is in black and white, but the background is vivid with color. Behind the crow is a puffy white cloud shaded with pink and purple above, and deep grey-blue below. Above and to the right, the sky goes from a bright reddish-orange to brilliant yellow in the top right corner. In the top left and bottom right, the sky is shades of bright pink darkening into purple and then blue. In the top left is an arc of 4 moons in phases progressing from white waxing crescent to full and ever so slightly reddish before disappearing behind the cloud. In the bottom right is a downward arc of 3 more moons, ranging from deep rusty red waning quarter to an even redder slim waning crescent. The illustration behind all this is the same drawing, but cropped and darkened with a layer of transparent black.

A panelless 1-page limerick comic about an antelope dancing on cantaloupe, drawn in black ink and watercolors on white paper. With a drawing for each of the 5 lines, the limerick reads, "There once was a whimsical antelope/who oft pronked and danced upon cantaloupe/He would bust out his moves/but the pulp clogged his hooves/and he slipped on the side of an anthill slope." The drawing for the first line shows the head of a goofily-smiling antelope with a string of decorations dangling from his antlers. To the right, the poem continues, "who oft pronked and danced upon cantaloupe". Here the antelope is wearing a gauzy transparent skirt and leaping towards a pile of cantaloupe. Below and to the left the third line reads, "He would bust out his moves". Here the antelope has his skirt pulled up provocatively as he twerks. The ground around him is littered with broken cantaloupes and puddles of cantaloupe pulp. To the right, the antelope is drawn in distress, his front legs flailing and dripping cantaloupe pulp. The poem continues, "but the pulp clogged his hooves". The last drawing at the bottom shows the antelope tripping over an anthill amidst more cantaloupe puddles and pieces. Two ants stand to the left with their hands on their hips, one of them shaking a fist at the antelope. The limerick concludes, "and he slipped on the side of an anthill slope." A third ant stands in the path of the antelope as he falls. The comic is signed "Akire Bubar" in the bottom right corner.

The cover artwork for First Flight, by Akire Bubar. The illustration shows a crow leaping joyously into flight against a large cloud and a sky of brilliant sunset colors. On the left is a nest on a tree branch; the egg in the nest is actually the world, with an "X" written on the northeast United States. A small gear is tucked into the nest with the world-egg, and a tiny surgical mask dangles from a branch above. Pale waxing crescent moons curve up then down again in the top left sky, darkening slightly and disappearing behind the cloud. The string of moons continues in the bottom right sky below the cloud, curving down and then up and to the right again. Each moon to the right is darker and redder than the one before.

On the left, we see a sheet of 3" stickers showing a cat walking with fluffy tail curled, front paw raised, & hind foot extended backwards, looking elegantly unconcerned. Lying on top of the right side of this is another sheet of 3" stickers. These stickers show a cat from the belly up as she leaps up and to the right, wearing an expression of open-mouthed exuberance. Text arcing above the drawing on this sticker reads, "Leap! ...And the curtain will appear." It makes me so happy to see this pop up in my feed from 8 years ago. I was so proud of this, and so proud to participate in the artists' showcase I created this for! The theme was "sound". I wracked my brains to come up with an idea that didn't involve drawings of headphones, musical instruments, boom boxes, or dancing, and ended up creating two submissions I was really proud of. I couldn't decide which one to submit, so the showcase organizer picked this one. 1/

And just like that, the poetry comics chapbook is *FINISHED*.❤️ OMG, can you believe it? I can't. Not just the comics, but *all* of it. Wow.
Since I posted this drawing to Patreon, I've been busy working on a website for the chapbook, figuring out fundraising ideas, and talking to the printer. I'm thinking of offering this particular drawing as a print — what do you think? Wouldn't this crow look great on your wall? *I* think so!
I'm both over-the-top excited to finally be done, and utterly at a loss for how to celebrate. Isn't that weird? So I'm trying to do that at least a little bit right here, right now. I made a Really Cool Thing! I still have to *get it out into the world* — but I made The Thing, and it's beautiful, and I'm proud. /1

A drawing of a crow not-quite-sitting on an egg in a nest — except the egg is actually the world, with an "X" placed on the northeastern United States. The crow is standing with their feet braced on either side of the nest, their head down and peering between their legs to better examine the world-egg. The nest has a few leaves sticking off the sides of it here and there, and is shown sitting at the crook of a branch. The illustration is drawn digitally in inky black and grey on a white background, and signed "Akire Bubar" by the artist in the bottom right corner.

The last comic for my poetry comics chapbook is finally DONE! At long freaking last! I can't believe it!

Some of you may remember when I posted this panel last fall. I don't know why I get stuck on the things I get stuck on, but I was stuck on this. And a lot of you offered up some really helpful feedback — *thank you* for that! It really helped. I still had to sit with it awhile & work on other things...but I finally got there, & got it done. Yippee! Thanks so much for the vote of confidence so many of you offered. 🥰

Back to class for eight weeks: winter haikus. I’ve been trying to write a haiku a day in January but January moves faster than I do in January so days were missed. I’ll keep trying as I’ve enjoyed recording an observation from the day in this way.

Anyone else a little flummoxed by planning 2021? I know life is *always* uncertain, but...yeesh. How are you navigating this? How do you make plans around everything that's unknowable right now?

The world is so freaking overwhelming right now - it's not just me, right? Like this past week, FFS, I don't even know what to say about it. Right? I feel like we're all slogging up a really steep, rocky incline. I keep looking up and out to orient myself to the larger landscape & to gauge the topography, and then staring determinedly back down at my feet for a bit, thinking only of putting one foot in front of the other - because if I spend too much time thinking about how steep the damned hill is, it's too much & I lose the will for it. And I guess the future is like a path with a lot of switchbacks where, no matter how hard we look, it's impossible to know exactly where it will lead, or exactly how far along we are. The future is obscured by trees. /1

A photo of a finely-detailed sketch of 3 fern fronds in fine black ink lines on textured white mixed media paper. The largest swoops upward from the bottom left to the top right, curling back on itself to the right. Another smaller frond also swoops upward from bottom left to the right, curving gently downward to the right at its tip. The third and smallest front is a small asymmetrical sprig swooping upward from beneath the mid-sized frond along the left of the drawing, leaning further left at the top. Finely penciled lines marking the border are just barely visible along the left, right, and bottom of the drawing.

Okay so life is a mess, that's usually true for me, really struggling, etc. ad nauseum - but let me tell you about THIS AWESOME FUN THING I AM DOING! I'm taking a poetry comics workshop with Comics by David Lasky online via Push/Pull. And OMG I'm in heaven with this class. It's that deeply nourishing sense of getting exactly what I need at exactly the right moment to push my art forward.
This was done lightning-fast, just a rough sketch for one of the exercises - but I'm just so proud to be *doing* it, you know? Not fussing, just doing.
So. A poem by Basho, in comics form - click to read:

patreon.com/posts/poetry-comic

A photo of a loosely-sketched poetry comic. The title, "Basho's Old Pond", is written in the top left corner. The comic is divided into 3 panels. The first, a square in the upper left corner, shows a rough sketch of the curved edge of a pond, with trees beyond the water's edge, and a crescent moon in a dark sky. The words "old pond" are written on the surface of the water. The second panel continues this same landscape in a backwards-L-shape around the first below and to the right, expanding to see the rough shape of mountains behind the trees behind the pond, and cattails and reeds around a rock in the foreground on a stony area jutting into the pond. There are two frogs, one sitting on the rock, and the other leaping over the first from behind, up and out towards the water to the right. Above the frogs, "frogs jumped in -" is written on the surface of the pond. The third panel expands the scene still further to the bottom and to the right. On the left are more rocks and reeds along the water's edge, and to the right, just beyond the rock seen in the second panel, we see a frog diving into the the pond. Ripples extend outward from the frog's body where it enters the water, with the words "sounds of water" written in rippled lettering along the curves of the water's outward movement. The poetry comic is signed "Akire Bubar 12.4.2020" below the bottom right corner of this final panel.

This is pretty much my life in a nutshell. Hopefully you can't relate! But if you do, well...solidarity, my friend. I salute you, and offer virtual hugs if you want one.
This is a pretty rough first sketch, & probably a WIP - there's more to say about this dilemma and the feelings it stirs up. But I also kinda like it as-is! So I figured I'd share what I've got so far. If it turns into something more, I'll show you that later.
There's a very short post that goes along with this on Patreon - you can see that here:

A on the theme of autumn rain for my haiku comics class. I always feel the drops of rain on my skin before it’s obvious it’s going to rain, even if I’m inside.

Haiku Comic with panels showing weather changing from blue sky to clouds to heavy rain and a character studying how rain is drawn in comics. And showing the character sensing the rain and feeling it drop on the skin while inside working before it rains outside. The haiku words are: dry drips on skin indoors. drops on paper too. half hour before it pours.
