Was ich dachte, was Mutterschaft sei: liebevolles Familienleben.

1/n First day back at work after 4 weeks off caring for C with her #postnataldepression. It’s not ‘just’ post natal depression though… she’s been depressed and anxious pretty much all of her life. Her #autism also means that she gets over stimulated very quickly and so can’t cope with the kids when they get boisterous or noisy. And so… she’s woefully ill equipped to cope when baby A starts crying. I expect I’ll have to excuse myself from Teams calls as I hear C bawling at A… #mentalhealth

"This focus on depressed mothers as mothers and the impact it has on their child is not unusual. Indeed, in my doctoral research, I found this idea prevalent in policy and practitioner accounts in child protection work; a mother’s mental health matters insofar as it affects her child, not apparently because she matters.
...
Mothers matter because they are people."
