A single blooming Cowslip (Primula veris, Echte Schlüsselblume) stands out from a dense ground cover of Alpine Milk-vetch (Astragalus alpinus, Alpen-Tragant).
Astragalus alpinus is a perennial legume native to alpine and arctic regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. It grows low to the ground, forming mats with pinnate leaves and clusters of purple to bluish flowers that bloom in summer. Well adapted to cold, nutrient-poor soils, it often colonizes rocky slopes, meadows, and tundra environments. Astragalus alpinus plays an important role as a nitrogen fixer, enriching poor soils and supporting plant succession in harsh mountain habitats. It also provides nectar for pollinators like bees and butterflies and forage for herbivores such as mountain sheep and reindeer in some regions.

A single blooming Cowslip (Primula veris, Echte Schlüsselblume) stands out from a dense ground cover of Alpine Milk-vetch (Astragalus alpinus, Alpen-Tragant). The Cowslip bears a cluster of pale yellow, slightly orange-tinged flowers on a slender stalk, with wrinkled, spoon-shaped leaves at the base. Around it, the finely divided, feathery leaves of Astragalus alpinus form a thick green carpet, suggesting a lush alpine or subalpine meadow in summer.

Figure 1 in Aavik et al. (2025): "Overview of the observed populations of Primula veris within the frames of the citizen science campaign ‘Looking for Cowslips’ in 2021 and 2022. Only populations associated with geographic coordinates retained after quality filtering are depicted (Methods S3). ‘S < L’ denotes populations where long-styled L-morphs were more abundant than short-styled S-morphs, while ‘S > L’ depicts populations where S-morphs were more frequent than L-morphs. ‘S = L’ stands for populations where S- and L-morphs had equal frequency. WGS84 was the coordinate system used for creating the map and respective coordinates are expressed in degrees. Figure S1 represents the observations with deviation of morphs as a continuous variable."
