Botanical Garden

How many kinds of sweet flowers grow
In an English Irish country suburban garden?
I'll tell you now of some that I know
And those that I miss you'll surely pardon..
Bush Vetch (Vicia sepium)Cowslip (Primula veris)Scarlet Pimpernel (Lysimachia arvensis)Meadow Foam (Limnanthes douglasii) aka Poached Egg Plant

These are all wild flowers, often considered to be weeds, but I like having them in my garden!

They are digging up the pavement in front of our house, to everyone's surprise.

Glad I got a pic of this little guy yesterday, sheer good luck.

I love how this turned out. The wind was pretty strong yesterday morning, and this little cowslip (primula veris) was moving around a lot. I think that movement is really subtly captured in this shot - by complete accident of course...

The flowers of a primula-like plant, with red ends to the petals and yellow centres. They are in varying degrees of focus against a blurry sky / vegetation background. There's a sense of movement as the wind was quite strong!

It was a cloudy day, but that little black fly there was sunbathing.

Basking in the glow of these sunny orange-spotted radiant yellow blooms of the cowslip.

A native wildflower, encouraged in the diverse floral landscape of my backyard.

Primulaveris
Its name suggests it’s a Springtime flower. The first cowslips have appeared in our hedgerows, end Jan - start Feb.

I live in Montreal and about 20 years ago I ordered these Primula Veris seeds all the way from Toronto’s Richter’s Herbs. I’d never seen these anywhere before and I fell in love with their bright, little nodding heads. I nurtured them carefully through the years and only found out years later that these are actually common cowslips that grow wild all over the British Isles.
It’s funny how one gardener’s common plant can be another gardener’s treasured rarity 😃

Today, the first Sunday in May, is Cowslip Sunday. The village where I live has an ancient association with the flower, which grows abundantly here. In Victorian times the people of would descend en masse to drink cowslip wine and indulge in all manner of ribald behaviour. There's often some sort of festival, but sadly not this year. That's me carrying the banner on a previous occasion.

#ClimateDiary am a bit late for #WildFlowerHour but after reading #RobertMacFarlane’s comment on how much #Cowslip there was this year, and everyone else sharing their pictures, I spotted so much too - nice how these conversations alert you, and to be enjoying this all together. And masses of #Dandelions everywhere too. As someone else said: it seems to be a yellow year! Though a few #Bluebells too 😊
