Last week I attended an event by @klimatriksdagen on #energytransition - it was interesting and educational!
My key takeaways:
1: #windpower has decreased in price by 63% since 2009. #nuclear power, has increased in price by 49%! 😮
2: Politics should remove fossil fuel #subsidies and invest in #energyefficiency !
3: Phase out #plastics from waste to reduce district heating #emissions
4: Secure a #sustainable #energy supply. Invest in #pumpedhydro & promote local #energycommunities 🌞🌬

Not a panacea but the combined oomph of a collection of buildings could be very handy for many purposes.
This is very cool.
I had thought that this type of pumpped hydro power system was what we need a lot more of to use in conjunction with intermittent power sources like wind and solar.
Glad to know a few were built between the 60’s and 90’s and they are still operational.
They don’t have the fix number of cycle limitation of a chemical battery.

Perhaps its wiser to develop hydrobatteries at abandoned open pit minesites, not on agricultural land. Then you might be able to use saltwater.

The tunnelling machine is bogged.
I read the EIS in detail back in the day, advising on groundwater as part of a larger submission.
I am confident that the geology ahead is poorly mapped and complex. Weathered basalt and limestone are both possible, with more opportunities for bogging and flooding. Watch this space...

Snowy 2.0 #PumpedHydro cost blow out to an estimated A$20 billion ... perhaps the wrong renewables decision by Turnbull back in 2017? But because of sunk cost, Labor are continuing with the project despite batteries and solar on warehouse roofs being a cheaper and scaleablelocal option.

Pumped Hydro is a closed system. The water is recycled. There is no need for it to be near a water course. We could use old mines. Water is pumped to the top during the day and gravity generates electricity when it’s needed.
“It comprises two ponds, one high and one low, a pipe between them and a pump/generator at the lower end. When electricity is abundant, water is pumped from the lower to the higher pond, thus storing energy. When electricity is scarce, water can be run down through the generator to regenerate electricity, and the water then held in the lower pond, to be used again.”
