"Questionnaire-based measures can provide little insights on cognitive mechanisms as they rely only on verbal and mnesic processes. By contrast, behavioral measures and computationally derived parameters
may go beyond explicit processes and capture more accurately states than traits, which may be useful in informing therapeutic strategies in the short run (for example, capturing state impulsivity that may help to adapt a psychotropic treatment when facing a patient with suicidal ideation). Altogether, our results represent a cautionary tale about the utilization of behavioral tasks and model parameters as tools for investigating inter-individual differences along therapeutically or diagnostically relevant time windows, and about the challenges facing computational phenotyping for diagnosis and prognosis."

A feature of the General #Elections… seems to have been the women’s #questionnaires issued to all who stood for Parliamentary positions. It is mentioned in “Time and Tide” that the Association of Women Clerks and Secretaries issued a questionnaire dealing with equal #franchise for men and women; the importance of carrying out the Education Act of 1918; equal opportunities for men and women in the Civil Service, and the retention of women police. “On the whole,” says the writer, “the replies have been most satisfactory, a fact which throws some light upon the question of what candidates have considered to be a wise election policy, although it does not necessarily tell us how much members of Parliament will accomplish. But although most of the members have hastened to answer all the questions favourably… exercising great care not to antagonise the women’s vote, there are a good many who have hedged, and a trifle clumsily. Mr. Clifford B. Edgar’s reply to the question… of votes for women on the same terms as men…—‘… millions of women now possess the franchise who would not have it if they were men.’ To attempt comment would be to paint the lily.”

Listening for Cultural Clues in Jazz Manouche

Django Reinhardt was a virtuoso guitarist and composer of Manouche (Gypsy) origin who lived between 1910 and 1953, achieving stardom in the 1930s. Being mostly associated with the jazz of his time, one may argue that his Gypsy origin was embedded into his music. After Django’s death, his music has been reappropriated by the Manouches and gradually became a community practice as well as a musical genre, nowadays known as Gypsy jazz or jazz Manouche. In this paper, we explore the existence and relevance of cultural markers associated with this musical genre, and attempt to relate musical and cultural features present in Manouche communities. The present work is based on questionnaires and interviews with both Manouche and Gadjé (non-Gypsy) musicians, includes listening tests proposed to musicians and instrument makers and accounts personal experiences of one of the authors (L.B.) as a Gadjo guitar apprentice. Our results confirm the importance of some cultural features for sound recognition that include the role of the music pedagogy within the Manouche community as well as the relevance of the guitar accompaniment.
