Social Media is Filled With Propaganda and Influence Campaigns
Lord, I’m so happy I heavily, heavily filter my content and mostly consume things from RSS feeds, because most media sources are a fire hose of nonstop propaganda. You can inform without trying to persuade or influence. Most media is presented in a way meant to influence my attitude or elicit emotions instead of providing information. I mean all media and all platforms. It’s fucking nuts!
Yes, I even have filters set up for the RSS feeds I read. How conspiracy theories consume people’s brains is insane, and I am actually clinically paranoid.
I’m schizotypal and I take antipsychotics for it, which is why I am extremely careful about what I allow into my head.
I’m aware that conspiracy theories always hook into our biases and what we are already fearful of. Intuitive thinking combined with biases like jumping to conclusions or assuming hidden intentional causes allows narratives to spread that feel emotionally true before they are carefully evaluated.
I’m aware that a lot of what I see on social media is framed to resonate with my existing fears, grievances, or uncertainties, so that it bypasses my ability to consciously reason. It reminds me of how, in chaos magic, sigils are intended to bypass your conscious filter. This is pretty much a memetic version of that.
A lot of actors seeking influence are making use of conspiracy theories to amplify mistrust, target specific anxieties, and reinforce “us versus them” thinking to destabilize individuals or groups. They repeatedly trigger emotional responses and reinforce biased interpretations to manipulate behavior.
The thing is, I am well aware of my mental vulnerabilities, which is why I always lock down and maintain a memetic quarantine.
