#Railcar

Today's historic photo of the day: Rail flaw detection vehicle SRS141 passes through Hawkesbury River, NSW, September 5 1983.

SRS141 was built in 1928 in St Louis (USA) as a passenger #railcar for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad. In 1972, it was converted by Sperry to provide rail flaw detection services to US railroads.

In 1973 it came to Australia, and roamed the NSW checking for rail flaws. It eventually returned to North America certainly by 2002, and is still in use over there

Taken from a pedestrian overbridge looking down over a curved island platform at a passenger railway station, we see yellow-liveried single car rail vehicle passing through on the far side of the platform. In the lower foreground in the centre of the platform is a white-painted roundel style station nameboard with the name HAWKESBURY RIVER in black block letters. In the background is a large expanse of water that forms a reach of the Hawkesbury River itself, beyond which are ranges of hills on the opposite banks.

Today's historic photo of the day: An overview of the railcar depot beyond the terminus station at Newcastle, NSW, June 9 1985.

Inside the shed is what looks like a Flyer set. To its right is a yellow-end 660 class #railcar set, next (in candy colours) is 631, then behind it is 661, then an unidentified candy set, and in the distance is 730, then 628, and finally in whiskers livery at far right is 721.

Taken from an elevated vantage point we look down onto a railcar depot on a flat piece of land on the back of a large river. A three-track depot shed houses a loco-hauled carriage set, and a number of two-car diesel railcar sets, some in Candy, some in yellow end and some in whiskers livery, are stabled outside the shed. Stabled on tracks to the left of the shed are some double deck EMU cars. In the background, a large reach of river fills much of the scene with industrial buildings lining both banks.

The photo is of a long rail car with no doors. The top and bottom are black. The side is blue with a thin white line running the length of the car. On the side are the words, "The Train of Thought" and "Education Rail Car".
The #1603 was built by Pullman Company as a combination baggage and passenger car. In 1951 it was converted to an Instruction Car and all of its windows were removed. In 1962 a second conversion was done making it the Monsanto Universal Training Car. Donated to the museum in 1971 it is now an additional program facility and is open for facilitated field trips.

This unique passenger railcar is one of only two AR2 series, manufactured in Latvia in 1997. This one (AR-02) was used in Lithuania for more than two decades and is now on display at Railway Museum in Vilnius. Another (AR2-01) belongs to Latvian Railway (LDz).

AR2s had one 310 kW engine, top speed of 120 km/h and had seats for 73 + 3 passengers.

If I had the money I'd buy an old #railcar, live out of it, and have it hitched all across the continent by the different #rail companies. I like #vintage #trains

But that's huge! I see your single carriage train and raise you the Class 139 Parry People Mover, used on the 1.3km branch line to Stourbridge Town in the English West Midlands.
It was once memorably described as "The cutest train I've ever seen" 🙂

A Parry People Mover, a small single car railway passenger vehicle painted white with a yellow front. It sits at a brick paved station platform with the station building on the left. The sky is cloudy and the ground is wet because this is the West Midlands.
