Yesterday @lionelb raised the question of the similarity of the Renault 8 to the Simca 1000. Both follow the same rear-engined formula, and are in the same size bracket but the main influence on the Simca’s design came from collaboration with Fiat, the French company’s main shareholder at the time the 1000 was introduced in 1961. I saw this late example - the 1000 survived until 1978 - at #RetroClassics Stuttgart in 2016.
The four-cylinder Porsche story continued in 1976 with the 924. Breaking with company tradition, the 924 had a front-mounted engine and a ‘transaxle’ gearbox at the rear. Like its predecessor the 914, the 924 started as a joint project with Volkswagen. VW dropped out but still contributed many parts, including the engine, although that was replaced by Porsche units when the car was developed into the 944 and 968. Westfalia mainly converted #Volkswagens. On the right, at the #GreatBritishCarJourney, a UK conversion on a Mk1 Transit, which appears to have been done by a company called #Canterbury (similar example here: http://www.taysideclassiccarclub.co.uk/this-is-our-new-addition-she-is-a-mk1-ford-transit-campervan-converted-by-a-company-called-canterbury-and-is-the-savannah-model-was-restored-between-2014-17-and-even-stared-in-a-2014-fil/ ).
