The train doors opened with a hiss, and we stepped inside. Underfoot, cicada corpses crunched. They were scattered around the door like Christmas snow the wind had blown in. The seats were empty except for items passengers might have left behind: a girl’s sailor suit, a briefcase, and an elf’s hat.

I pointed to one of the seats in the front. In it sat a pigeon, pecking at a cicada. Next to it was a Western-style conductor’s hat.

"At least one of them isn't driving," Shishi said.

"I wouldn't be so sure," I replied.

I tried to turn toward her, but realized I couldn’t move. It was like sleep paralysis, where only my eyes moved. By squinting to the side, I could see a glass dome. Through it appeared the distorted shape of a can of red bean soup towering above me. Beyond that were the cabin and the bed#room. Floating above it all was Claire’s distorted, terrified face.

It was a simple cafe, advertising carefully sourced ingredients. The interior was dim with lots of wood. Brown was the word that came to mind viewing it. The shadowy brown of an ancient haunted grove. Faces with masks under their chins floated in dark liminal spaces. The smell of food gave a sense of warmth the decor failed to lend the place.

“It’s ironic… you hated me for not returning Sayaka-san’s feelings, and hated Haru because she might.” As soon as it was out of her mouth, Touko regretted it. It was rather an oblique way of answering the question, and one was likely to antagonize Arisu.

Arisu must have missed the full meaning of the statement. Instead of rising to the bait, she pressed Touko with a difficult but reasonable question. One that sounded less like a challenge and more like a genuine question. “Well, what would you do if you thought someone was going to steal Yuu-san away from you?”

The human emotions helped me refocus, and I looked out. At first, all I saw was a blur of sand #yellow, but then streaks of motion. Three gecko soldiers were running, and then they were gone. Some monstrous, unearthly purple thing swallowed them. A violet cloud floated up from where the geckos had been. My eyes locked onto it. “Warm. Good.” A hunger I had no name for eased.

Then the violet haze vanished. “More.”

My eyes — eyes of the frog — followed the shapeless monster as it swooped across the yellow toward…

“Tsuchigumo, youkai purse spider,” I supplied a name. The frog had no names for these things, only fear and joy. The latter surged as the formless purple thing swallowed the Tsuchigumo. “Good, More, Good,” and feed the violet hunger.

Even in the face of impending disaster, one keeps living life as usual. You close your eyes and hope you will escape it. Only I didn’t think I would elude fate. Alternately, one scurries about looking for an out. But in the face of dragons and emperors, there is no exit. That doesn’t stop one from trying, and a few days later, one of the sacrificial doves visited me, Yuè Dié, a popular young courtesan. Moon Butterfly, a name she deserved: small, delicate, a graceful dancer, with a soft melodic voice.

I felt my sanity slipping as I staggered toward the far end of the cabin. I wish I could say I was seeking another exit, but it was blind fear that motivated me. The dreadful laughter and evil chant drained my energy and sanity, leaving me stuck, unable to move. The foul smell physically choked me.
