After some experiments, I'm confident that SPSS doesn't use a general purpose constraint solver for the same purpose, so to achieve the same behavior I'll probably have to use an ad hoc algorithm in PSPP. #spss #pspp

Very first super-primitive success at getting #pspp to understand #spss graphs. On the right, the plot as shown in SPSS. On the left, as shown in this very preliminary attempt. You can see that the data is interpreted correctly, since the lines look correct (although it's flipped vertically from one to the other).

I've been having fun figuring out how to read graphs from SPSS viewer files over the last few weeks. In a few more weeks I might be able to render some of the simpler ones. At some point I'm going to have to figure out how to do regression testing for graphical output, too. #pspp #spss

I put out a preview release of the first #Rust version of GNU #PSPP last night that supports reading and writing #SPSS SPV files. I think that the SPV support is better, at this point, than the C version of PSPP. I consider it just a "preview" release only because I know that the PDF output has some nasty bugs in it, particularly when tables get split across multiple pages.

Cool new feature: support for ANSI color in tables output to the terminal.

I'm so proud of the work I've done this year toward rewriting all of GNU PSPP in #rust. I'm almost done with implementing the SPV file format, better and better tested and better documented than the C version. And safer, of course. Sometime next year I'll replace the pspp.benpfaff.org site by the Rust implementation. And then I'll start implementing the language itself.

I might even work on implementing the chart language. It never seemed practical in C. It might be, in Rust.

I'm putting together notes for novices to do simple data analysis with R and the fact that I'm telling them to "cut and paste this inscrutable block of code at the start of your file" reminds me of nothing so much as when I worked for the ESRI in Dublin in the mid 1980s and we used to run SPSS analyses remotely on UCD's Amdahl by sandwiching our SPSS code (on punch cards) between two decks of IBM Job Control Language cards of which we understood nothing whatsoever. #rlang #spss #dataanalysis

I bought a 2 machine license for SPSS (student discount) for school. It gave me a serial number.I loaded a copy on Windows (v31), worked fine. Anyone know where i can find SPSS for Linux? I keep seeing reference to v27 working but I can't find a download link, even on the IBM website.And lots of "here is how you install it/set environment" but no actual link to download. Not that I know if my serial # will even work or if its Win/Mac only. #spss #ibm #linux

@derbruesseler Interessanter Vergleich :-) Ich würde eher sagen, dass es kein Äquivalent für #Stata in der OS-Welt gibt. Es ist ein sehr funktionales Tool, was aber durchaus komplex ist, und auch kein besonders hübsches UI hat. Zudem die vielen Ado-Packages als Erweiterung. #R wie #Linux gehe ich mit. Es ist sehr leistungsfähig, es gibt 1000 Wege zum Ziel und die Entwicklung ist sehr dynamisch. #SPSS technisch ok, graphisch hübsch, begrenzt, fette Software, passt zu #Windows.
