A pretty big piece of news came in last week. #SWHID , a identifier and referencing scheme for software source devised by our friends at #SoftwareHeritage is now an ISO standard! iso.org/standard/89985.html . If you need to cite software, you know how to do so now.

@sneumann @wobweger

I recently saw this via LinkedIn posted by @rdicosmo.

And this is not a comprehensive answer to your question, but this could be one way towards recognizing (research) software and supporting the work and vision of Software Heritage @swheritage

“We should also consider the efforts of Software Heritage. Located in France, they're archiving the entirety of software created globally, there's a European initiative to build upon this,” President Emmanuel Macron at the launch of the "Choose Europe for Science” initiative.

Delighted to see that the #SWHID standard from @swheritage has been confirmed as ISO/IEC 18670:2025 - many congratulations to the team!

This is very significant as it means we can now reference SWHID within #CRA harmonised standards.

And of course ISO wants money for it despite it being created and contributed freely.

We had today the great pleasure of welcoming Jaime Arias (mastodon.social/@arias@lipn.in) from LIPN in my course on at ENS Paris-Saclay. He explained how the Software Heritage platform and the do facilitate reproducibility when dealing with source code associated to scientific publications. Thanks a lot Jaime for coming ;)

This video explains in a few minutes the relevance of having intrinsic identifiers, like SWHID, for software. It is the kind of detailed explanation that software developers will appreciate, I think youtube.com/watch?v=j0oLzVLhtIQ @swheritage

Tomorrow Jun 11 I'll be presenting the (the Software Heritage Persistent Identifier) at , an intrinsic identifier that points to permanently stored source , thus allow for fostering the scholarly ecosystem and much more! I'll briefly how the journal integrates it in our publication workflow, as a use case. A joint work with @moranegg, the SWHID WG, and the Software Heritage team.

#CISA has released a draft document on "Software Identification Ecosystem Option Analysis" (roughly: how to identify specific software artifacts that are relevant for security use cases): cisa.gov/resources-tools/resou

It's important work that deserves attention and community discussion.

We, as @swheritage, have participated in the RFC (now closed) and submitted our comments here: regulations.gov/comment/CISA-2

TL;DR: they should look into SWHIDs!
