You have no power there. You play in the garden, or not, at their whim. They need not give you an opportunity to protest their decision to allow you, or not. And they don't need to explain themselves to you.

Lesson: don't choose the walled garden.

Damage to American small (and medium) businesses. Not the megacorps.

The dude with the mall kiosk selling phone cases and chargers? He's getting reamed by this, and will likely go out of business, because he brings all his stock in from China in small shipments that have always fallen under the de minimis exemption (which is now toast). He can't compete with having to pay five times as much for shipping and tariffs all of a sudden.

The independent phone-and-laptop repair place? He and his 3 techs are probably twiddling their thumbs a lot soon. Most of the parts they buy to fix your broken screen or charge port come in just like the mall kiosk dude's. A replacement screen that used to cost him $30 plus $5 shipping now suddenly costs $30 plus $15 tariffs plus $20 shipping-and-tariff-collection-and-remittance-and-brokerage-clearance charges. He'll have to double what he charges to replace that screen in your Samsung.

Amazon? Walmart? Best Buy? All the other corporate behemoths? They're not importing in dribs and drabs by post. It won't affect them much at all, except they'll probably increase prices a bit to cover the extra paperwork to clear their shipments at the border, plus a lot more to cover the tariffs.

(Yes, you already knew this. I just wanted to say it.)

Hey, now! This dream has a novel design, and a most likely impracticably stupid one at that! Read on!

In my dream, a family of friends, father, mother, teenage kids, was getting me to a hotel in town. I was going to take a flight the next day, and that was the best option.

We got to the hotel. I got a room assigned to me. Then we got into the elevator. The hotel itself was like a cylinder, and the elevator was essentially a ring around the outer perimeter of the building. This elevator was huge. Like dozens of people could fit in there with luggage.

We got into the elevator, seated ourselves, and the elevator started to move. It was moving up and spinning around the building at the same time, in a kind of screwing motion. I said:

"I didn't know when I woke up this morning that I'd get screwed today. :derpface: "

Everyone laughed.

This dream was unusually vivid. There was more to it, but it is fuzzy and not important.

25/03/2025: After taking a week off from the #door project, I continued working on it yesterday and today. I closed the holes for the iron bracket fixation and decided to mount the bracket sideways.

The spacing of the original holes was too narrow, and I didn’t want to widen it towards the front side to avoid further dust from the angle grinder cuts.

Last week, I spent some time rethinking the approach and ordered natural insulation material (hemp strips) along with suitable screws and dowels.
Unfortunately, the local DIY stores don’t stock many natural building materials, and I don’t want to use construction foam or similar products.

Today, I drilled the floor very carefully using a special drill bit in steps of 6mm → 8mm → 10mm (without percussion drilling) to avoid damaging the delicate terracotta tiles, then fitted the plugs. To ensure the screw heads sat flush with the wood, I deepened the holes with a countersink bit.
I then screwed in the Torx screws by hand to minimize expansion force in the dowels and reduce any further risk of cracking the tiles.

Finally, we fitted the door, and so far, I’m satisfied with the progress and the custom fit.
