Dr. Benjamin Berens, #SECUSO, has begun his visit at ETH Zürich. He will be working with the “Security, Privacy & Society” research group led by Prof. Verena Zimmermann. Between 3 November and 19 December, in addition to Prof. Zimmermann and her team, he will also meet other #researchers at ETH Zürich who focus on #security and #privacy or human #behavior #research in general. During the research visit Dr. Berens, Prof. Zimmermann and Lorin Schöni want to work on their latest project on synthesizing findings across the field of #phishing research. Their work focuses on aggregating results from a #diverse range of studies.

Im November besuchte uns Prof. Dr. Stefan Katzenbeisser als Gast in der Forschungsgruppe #SECUSO! Katzenbeisser ist Professor an der Universität Passau und Mitbegründer der INCYDE GmbH, die sich auf die #Sicherheit im #Schienenverkehr spezialisiert hat. Vor dieser Berufung hatte er eine Professur an der TU Darmstadt und war Senior #Scientist bei Philips Research in Eindhoven. Anlass des Besuchs war die Einladung zur #KASTEL Distinguished #Lecture, wo er einen Vortrag zum Thema "Securing the Critical #Transportation #Infrastructure - Challenges and Solutions" hielt.

Juraj Sikra, #SECUSO, is on the program committee for #European #Interdisciplinary #Cybersecurity #Conference which takes place in Darmstadt, Germany, from June 17-18, 2026. The call for papers for next year’s #EICC is published. Current contributors from the relevant area must submit their work by January 18, 2026 (AoE). Wir begrüßen Christian Mack als neuen Mitarbeiter im #SECUSO Team! Christian hat kürzlich seinen Master-Abschluss im Studiengang #Informatik am @KIT_Karlsruhe erworben. In seiner Masterarbeit untersuchte er, wie sich das #Vertrauen der US-Wähler nach der #Präsidentschaftswahl 2024 zwischen den bei der Wahl eingesetzten Wahlmaschinen unterscheidet. Seit dem 1. November 2025 ist er nun Teil des SECUSO-Teams und beschäftigt sich mit #eVoting sowie mit Online-Desinformationskampagnen.

Our #SECUSO Post-Doc Dr Juraj Sikra (in crimson jumper) attended the DiTraRe #Symposium 2025 to present his #research about the data protection risks posed by #wearables to sports #science. Juraj also met with his colleagues Dr Katja Keller and Mr Christian Rose (PhD Candidate) from the Institute of Sports and Sports Science (IfSS). Juraj related engaging discussions not just about sensitive sports science data, but also the shared love of competitive sports.

The #poster "Risks Posed by Wearables to Data Protection in Sports Science as Identified by User Studies" by Juraj Sikra presents a systematic literature review for the urgent novel topic of protecting sensitive data collected during sports science #research with #wearables.
The poster for the paper "A Short Commentary On: 'Would John Dewey wear a Fitbit? A pragmatist analysis of self-tracking technologies’ impact on habit formation'" by Juraj Sikra, Diana Dimitrova, and Lea Sophie Singson presents the results of the work of three subject matter experts which followed an individual textual analysis and inter-subjective reflection methodology to write a commentary on a philosophical paper.
The DiTraRe Symposium 2025 will take place December 2-3 in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Prof. Melanie Volkamer, #SECUSO, wird am 20. Januar 2026 auf der Fachtagung "Update für Personalrätinnen und Personalräte" zum Thema "Sicherheitsanforderungen an digitale Tools für Internet-Wahlen und Abstimmungen" sprechen. Insbesondere für Personalvertretungen ist das Thema relevant, um einerseits eine informierte Meinung zum Thema Internet-Wahlen und Abstimmungen zu haben und andererseits besser zu verstehen, welche Fragen mit Herstellern von Internetwahlsystemen vor deren Einsatz geklärt werden sollten. Die Tagung wird von der Bayrischen Akademie für Verwaltungsmanagement organisiert.

Die Forschungsgruppe #SECUSO beteiligt sich mit dem Bürgerpanel "Wir forschen digital" beim Trialog zum Thema "Zwischen #Datenschutz und Datenrausch. Warum braucht unsere Gesellschaft #Cybersicherheit?". "Wir forschen digital" bietet Bürger:innen die Möglichkeit, an Studien zu digitalen Technologien teilzunehmen.
Beim Trialog am 6. November, ab 17:30 Uhr in der Triangel können sich Interessierte im Gespräch informieren und an einem Mini-Experiment zum Thema #Phishing teilnehmen. Wir freuen uns auf alle, die Lust haben vorbeizuschauen!

Emiram Kablo visits #SECUSO
We are delighted to welcome Emiram Kablo as a guest researcher in the SECUSO #research group in October! Emiram Kablo has been a research assistant at the IT Security Chair at the University of Paderborn since 2022 and conducts research on usable #authentication systems for virtual reality and neurotechnologies, among other topics. Following the invitation to the SECUSO Research Seminar in February last year, an exciting #collaboration between the two chairs developed around #usability studies in virtual reality.

Wir haben eine neue Version der #Privacy Friendly ToDo-Listen-App veröffentlicht! Teil des Updates sind kleine Verbesserungen am Widget und Fehlerbehbungen, sowie zusätzliche Übersetzungen. Die PFA Todo-Listen-App ist eine der Privacy Friendly Apps für #Android, die von der Forschungsgruppe #SECUSO entwickelt wurden. Im Rahmen des PFA-Patenprogramms wird sie aktuell von Externen betreut und weiterentwickelt. Seit Juni 2025 sind die Privacy Friendly Apps nur noch im @fdroidorg Store verfügbar.

Prof. Teague is the CEO of Thinking #Cybersecurity and an Associate Professor at the Australian National University. Am 14. Oktober entscheidet der Rat der EU über einen Entwurf zur Kontrolle von privaten Chats, der es erlauben würde, Nachrichten auf den Endgeräten vor und nach der Verschlüsselung zu prüfen, was einen massiven Eingriff in die Privatsphäre der Nutzer:innen bedeutet und Verschlüsselung schwächt.

On September 19, a delegation of U.S. Secretaries of State from 12 states visited KASTEL Security Research Labs, accompanied by the Aspen Institute Germany. At this occasion, Tobias Hilt, #SECUSO, presented how to systematically examine human factors that need to be considered in #onlineelections (e.g., perceived usability or voters' ability to verify their votes), and the results of a recent study on US citizens' trust in electronic voting machines.

Congratulations to Peter Mayer on his promotion to associate #professor! Peter Mayer worked as a research assistant for the #SECUSO research group starting in 2015 first at TU Darmstadt and later at @KIT_Karlsruhe. In 2023, he moved to the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), initially as an assistant professor. However, joint #research projects and his role as coordinator and co-speaker of the “Human and Societal Factors” research group in the @helmholtz funded subtopic “Engineering Secure Systems” still connect him to SECUSO.
