Second phone call of the day: "Help, the server is no longer reachable, and the internet connection is down! We're completely stuck!"
Knowing the location and type of their server room, I asked, "Have you sent someone to check?" They replied, "Not yet, but we're sending a colleague right away." Five minutes later, their colleague called, embarrassed: "Sorry, the cleaning staff were in the room, and to clean better, they UNPLUGGED THE SERVERS FROM THE OUTLETS (the UPS units are in another room), to lift the cables and clean better."

One of the reasons I appreciate file systems like ZFS is the versatility they offer when it comes to making changes. I have a mirror of two disks for a small home server. One disk is internal, the other in an external USB 3 enclosure. I decided to replace them. I turned off the external enclosure, swapped the disk inside, created the partition (and encrypted it with GELI), and added it to the ZFS mirror. In just a few minutes, it completed the resilver process, with only 300 GB used out of 2 TB total. Once finished, I replaced the internal disk and performed the same operation. In half an hour, I had the entire RAID migrated to new disks, and the downtime was strictly related to the physical replacement of the internal disk and the boot. Simple, fast, secure, and reliable.

due to the "well I'll be danged" levels of new members during the soft-launch of the instance, we will need to have some planned downtime in order to upgrade our server with more RAM. It should only take a few minutes in this case. will post again when we have an exact time.

later in the month we will need to have a longer planned outage as we move storage off the main server, more details on that when we have them.
