Upgraded some packages on the #homeserver and PCI passthrough for the #gpu to #jellyfin broke. Instead of just fixing it, I decided to switch #docker to use CDI, which meant writing some openrc init scripts so #gentoo would build the CDI config each boot.

Could have been a 2 minute fix, ended up as a 60 minute fix, but I learned stuff.

So my photo libarary is still in iCloud as I didn't have the time to set up my new #homeserver with Immich yet. So I started up the Mac Mini M1 - oh boy is it a pain to work with because it is so slow. And I am just talking about sorting photos for a printed calendar here.
It is so sad how the great #Apple hardware deteriotes over time. I will probably install #Asahi #Linux on thias machine sooner or later.

My home server has been getting a bit loud lately, with the fan audible more than not. I've been wondering what the little thing is up to, but noticed no significant load peaks or anything. Upon closer inspection, the CPU was getting a bit toasty, ~70C while idling(!) Took the thing apart to see if the vents were clogged, but it looked pristine inside.

A bit more searching lead me to a post about my specific hardware (#ASUS NUC), saying "there is a spot where dust gets trapped between the cooling fan and the air intake fins - but you can't see this, until you actually remove the cooling fan". So, I guess I have to take the thing apart.

Having removed all the dust and assembled the NUC again, the CPU temp has dropped at least 20 degrees C and my server is now nice a quiet again. I've read posts about replacing the thermal paste for more efficient cooling, but that'll have to be another time :)
