We have made it through the #ServerUpgrade to #Mastodon 4.2.1. It took a total of 50 min to get everything prepared, backups made, and new things running. Currently the search index is rebuilding so things may be a bit slow and search may not work as well until that process completes.

So, here's my #homelab / #selfhosting #question:

I've set my sights on an eBay listing for a #Dell #PowerEdge R720 w/ 2x Xeon E5-2643's, 96 GB of PC3-10600R RAM, and 8x 3.5" HDD bays, all for just under $300. (Supposedly 3.5" bays, a bit confused on this point as their listing disagrees with the title – I've messaged the seller for clarification.)

My hope is to just drop the TrueNAS drives from the original machine "as-is" into the server and hopefully at the worst have to do some boot repair.

Anyway, the actual questions are:

I know next to nothing about actual server equipment – is this plan rotten from the beginning?
Is this server a decent "starting point" for a home lab that's graduating off consumer grade hardware?
Will I need much of anything else in addition to the blade itself??

Happy to report that the upgrade for the https://india.goonj.xyz Mastodon instance has completed. Everything seems to have gone smoothly. Server seems snappier. Please report if you see any issues.

Due to increased number of user signups on the india.goonj.xyz mastodon instance, we will be upgrading the server to a more capable server. Please expect downtime for a couple of hours while the upgrade is completed.

The upgrade will tentatively start at 00 Hours 25th July 2023. The instance should be available within an hour if everything goes fine.
