The Zaramutas – Big Steps

Given the current state of the world, the music scene needs politically charged music more than ever. Good music has always been a catalyst for social change, and these are the moments when The Zaramutas’ new single comes in handy. “Big Steps“ carries everything you ever needed from a proper alternative rock banger. Captivating vocal performance, heavy riffs, and excellent drumming are just some of the qualities this London-based duo packs in their music, but as is usually the case, there’s always more lurking beneath the surface. Lyrically, “Big Steps“ is a call for unity, pointing out that only collective strength, resistance, and forward motion brings social changes and a better life for all. The band expertly navigates important themes that tackle all aspects of society through wisely crafted, sharp, direct lyrics. The band packs a lot of emotion, setting the mood for contemplation about important topics that tackle each one of us. Therefore, it’s a highly relatable composition that will immediately resonate with the crowd. Sonically, The Zaramutas expertly blend many complementary rock subgenres in order to deliver an impactful experience. Perhaps alternative rock comes to mind first, as the fundamental elements of this genre dominate throughout the entire composition, but do not be surprised if you stumble upon some of the finest properties borrowed from the heavy rock, hard rock, stoner, sludge, and other similar styles. The Zaramutas  use all these additional elements as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to elevate their music to an entirely new level while simultaneously remaining true to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, these experimentations with various subgenres resulted in a catchy, memorable, engaging, and powerful track that will unquestionably appeal to anyone who appreciates heavy music performed straight from the heart.

As soon as you press play, you’ll notice how all those colossal guitar riffs shape a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. The band wisely, tastefully, and expertly stacked each riff to serve as a colossal wall of sound that prevents this song from being mellow for even a second. Besides all the rawness, abrasiveness, and aggression delivered by packing generous servings of distortion, “Big Steps“ also carries so many melodies due to the complexity of those guitar riffs. It’s nearly mindblowing how the aggression and harmony work together here, as they build a perfect atmosphere for channeling important themes through lyrics. There are layers and layers of guitars recorded for a maximum impact, but the distortion is perfectly controlled in this case, preventing everything from being chaotic. The marvelous, soulful, passionate, emotive, and powerful vocal performance acts as a centerpiece of this composition, delivering a meaningful message, commanding attention, elevating everything to new heights, and guiding listeners through each segment of the song. The impressive vocal range seamlessly balances low, mid, and high notes, emphasizing everything The Zaramutas intended to achieve with this song. Besides decorating all the segments and instrumentations, these vocal harmonies also contribute more than necessary emotional depth and complexity to an already intricate song structure. The vocal and guitar pair harmoneously from scratch to finish, making “Big Steps“ such a memorable listening experience worth repeating over and over again.

Besides guitars, you’ll also notice some additional synth maneuvers, something like mellotron, theremin, or guitar synth effect, decorating particular segments. It gives this song more artsy, avant-garde, experimental vibes while still remaining grounded in alternative rock. Of course, this composition wouldn’t sound this good without the equally impressive rhythm section. You’ll hear how warm-sounding basslines lurk beneath all those guitars, offering more heaviness, clarity, and depth while simultaneously acting like a binding element between the mentioned instrumentations and rhythmic patterns. The exceptional drumming performance, based upon cleverly arranged, flawlessly performed, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics, keeps everything in line while dictating groove and pace. Each hit of the snare, kick of the bass drum, accentuation on the hi-hat, and splash over the cymbal cuts through the ambiance, making this song even more groovy, dynamic, powerful, and detailed. As you can see, each instrument plays a significant role here, making this track worth repeating over and over again. “Big Steps” is one of the finest heavy alternative rock tracks you’ll hear this year, and it will easily become one of your favorite songs as well. It packs tremendous energy, aggression, but also harmony, melody, and control, proving that alternative rock music still has so much to offer.  The Zaramutas break all the rules and shapeshift the boundaries by experimenting with so many rock subgenres, and with so many qualities showcased through their clever songwriting, brilliant ideas, and marvelous musicianship, “Big Steps“ showcases a fresh, unique, exciting, memorable version of modern rock. Therefore, head to your favorite streaming platform and listen to it loud!

Primitive Man – Observance [Things You Might Have Missed 2025]

By Spicie Forrest

It’s been a decade since Primitive Man last graced these halls with 2015’s tepidly received Home is Where the Hatred Is, but they haven’t been idle. In the meantime, the Denver trio has released 2 LPs, a full-length EP, a split with Unearthly Trance, and a collab with Full of Hell.1 Those ten years were spent experimenting, learning, and honing their sound into something so incredibly bleak that not even the promo pit could contain such hopeless darkness.2 Released on Halloween, Observance sees Primitive Man both doubling down and branching out to offer their darkest work yet.

To assuage any doubts early, crushing despair is still the foundation of Primitive Man’s sound. Observance feels like being imprisoned and forgotten in a lightless pit. In an inverted format reminiscent of funeral doom, vocalist/guitarist Ethan McCarthy’s axe predominantly serves as a foil for others. He lays a nearly riffless foundation of maddening single chords (“Social Contract”) and maggot-infested buzzing (“Devotion,” “Transactional”) upon which bassist Jonathan Campos and drummer Joe Linden drive these sonic interpretations of the abyss. Campos is patient, waiting for the perfect moment to savage listeners (“Seer”) or waterboard them with molten tar (“Natural Law”). Conversely, Linden actively stokes fear through the hunt. Whether invoking the ritualistic horror of Choir (“Devotion,” “Social Contract”) or closing in to suffocate his victims (“Water”), Linden keeps listeners trapped in a waking nightmare. McCarthy’s inhuman bellows, like tortured screams rent from a caged beast, round out Observance, at once malevolent, feral, and seething with impotent rage.

Primitive Man knew it wouldn’t be enough to just shove listeners into that lightless pit; they filled it with fresh horrors, too. Filtered through their singularly despondent style, “Seer” quickly launches into a punky downbeat rhythm before giving way to the Primitive Man’s iconic dissonant hammering. “Social Contract” concludes in similar fashion, but starts with sinister wooden clapping and an ominous sample of an angry mob slowly losing control. After a blackened opening, “Natural Law” unleashes a furious, grinding salvo that’s all the more terrifying for the vicious howls McCarthy weaves through it. Of everything on Observance, it’s a new element that threatens sanity most: McCarthy’s deranged, utterly fucked lullabies (“Devotion,” “Transactional,” “Natural Law”). As if desperately seeking a reprieve that will never come, his guitar screams to itself the nursery melodies that once brought comfort and safety, now tainted and defiled in madness.

Primitive Man’s refinement of their signature death sludge and warped departures therefrom speak to a greater accomplishment: Observance demands your attention for all 68 minutes. By incorporating new elements, Primitive Man makes the style they’re known for shine all the brighter. By slimming down the ambient interlude (“Iron Sights”)3 and spreading it out among the proper tracks, Observance offers moments to reset and pray for salvation between nightmares. Enthralling from end to end, Observance is a harrowing experience that teases the sweet release of silence before dashing those hopes in evil, sadistic brilliance. If you didn’t like Primitive Man before, I doubt anything about this record will change your mind. This is the most Primitive Man that Primitive Man has ever been. But if you, like me, enjoy begging for light and being denied, Observance is your ticket to decadent, hopeless agony.

Tracks to Check Out: “Devotion,” “Natural Law,” and “Water.”
