@andypiper Like I have *finally* found my own "island of sanity", in the midst of the sheer madness.

I've been using for over 20+ years & have about 3k contacts in there. As part of my decoupling process, I'm currently running a little experiment ...

Get in touch with everyone via DM to say 'Hi!', reconnect & find out whether they'd be willing to get together on a 1:1 Web meeting & go through a 'proper' catch-up.

Some interesting results coming along so far: 100 DMs sent, 4 people responded, 3 wanted to meet up. The rest? Crickets! 🤯

And so it begins ... The first yearly subscriptions / renewals for digital tools have arrived and already have made a number of decisions about each of them:

- Cancelled Medium
- Cancelled Slack Pro
- Deleted PayPal account
- Cancelled TextExpander (deleted account)
- Finally, deleted Twitter handle

The one that hurt the most? Twitter, by far! 😤 18 years of my digital microblogging life gone in a single click! 🤯

Yikes! Will I ever recover? 🤔

@haraldschirmer Hummm ... are you talking about Flickr or Mastodon? I am confused now 🥴

Frankly, for all of the I still use on a daily basis that don't rely on an obnoxious algorithm it's working for me in the exact same way you describe above, which is why I'm confused.

Yes, I know and realise most of our/my friends aren't in those other algo-free platforms, but then again there is an opportunity to nurture new ones while we await for them to show up, don't you think?

‘As long as we rely on social-media sites to curate what we read, we allow them to control what we read, and their interests are not our interests’ 👉🏻 archive.is/85BTT

I’m going to keep coming back and refer to this fine piece every time folks ask me about what RSS newsfeeds are all about. Taking back control of and head back to surely is quite a conversation starter for those who *still* care 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻

I just attended a Webinar by @markcatchlove with @workessence delivering a superb presentation on ‘Re-balancing the workplace’, in the context of & the

And all I can think about now is Alpha and Beta Work, as he's nicely described over in this fine article 👉🏻 bit.ly/AlphaBetaWork and how both would fit together with the emergence of & for

After reading this piece 👉🏻 bit.ly/3ZSkPiN on Substack's attempt to become the 'next Twitter' with 'Notes', my first initial thought was just, 'Meh! No, thanks! Learned my lessons through the hard way with different over the last two decades' 😤😠🤬

Quite happy with the and for that matter, thank you very much! 😍👍🏻

Note to self: You need to shake off that bad practice, acquired via , about posting stuff away like there’s no tomorrow.

Things are different here. In the true nature of & , the pace, the intent, the effort are all taking their own course.

Sometimes, just one idea, one thought, one invitation for a potential conversation, perhaps not even, is more than enough.

Build, nurture & sustain for the long-term… 15 / 20 years from now …

‘Most WFH Discussions Are Basically Class Warfare’ 👉🏻 bit.ly/3JGnDcH ... Are they? 🤔

IF ONLY orgs. would have been more motivated about adapting to over 17 years ago, don't you think? 🤯

I suspect with , the conversations would have been completely different today. As a starting point, the false narrative of would be pretty much dead. Right from the start!

@judell @dweinberger Oh, gosh, Jon, indeed! In a way, that's also how it feels over here in . Just like a lovely trip down the memory lane of the early days of Web 2.0.

In fact, I've noticed how plenty of the people I keep reconnecting with, are early bloggers. Folks who then adapted to , then drift away elsewhere to, finally, come back to the beginning:

An Open Social Web, decentralised, distributed, hyperconnected, networked civil 😍😅👍🏻

If you could only read one blog post today that will have a significant impact in terms of how you'll view both relationships & friendships from here onwards, look no other piece than this one 👉🏻 psychologytoday.com/us/blog/ev by @dweinberger featuring @judell.

'Intermittent friends bound together intimately.' 🤯 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Now, *that* folks is what & did to us all but took away just as fast! 😤

Back in the good old days of , & this quote by @GreatDismal made the rounds a fair bit:

'I think that technologies are morally neutral until we apply them. It's only when we use them for good or for evil that they become good or evil.'

Well, based on the many conversations I've had lately on the topics of
& , I just thought I'd share it across, once more.

As a gentle reminder for us all, yours truly included! 😁😎👍🏻

Things I appreciate from being in Mastodon: slowly, but steadily, reconnecting with plenty of the early pioneers of and the Web 2.0 movement from the early 00s.

Somehow, over the years, as I drifted away, I lost track of many of them. Thanks to MT, I can now 'reconnect' with them AND their thinking to learn what they're up to nowadays.

*That*, on its own, is just *totally* worth the time spent in 😍👍🏻

@quinnovator I mean both externally & internally. It's not orgs., but people inside orgs. 🤯

Trying to strike a conversation with someone was much more successful when and were en vogue, but it seems now that they are 'dead' (to some), there is no longer an option to engage with people in a two-way dialogue. Therefore, the ghosting 😢

Oh, and it's not just rude, but I also find it rather unprofessional in terms of biz etiquette.

(I realise it may well be just me though 😢)

From Groupware to Web 2.0 / Enterprise 2.0 to then Groupware 2.0 (= Chatting & Messaging Apps). All of that over the course of roughly 3 short decades.

Fast forward another decade to 2022/23 and Musk may have provoked, unintentionally, the 4th technology lifecycle shift: Open, Decentralised, Distributed .

Will it blend this time around? 🤔

15 years ago today, I wrote this post 👉🏻 bit.ly/NoeMailAnniversary 🤯

It'd *totally* transform my professional career. I shifted into (a.k.a. ) as my primary meas of , & within the enterprise.

15 years later, I'm still going strong at it. Why? Well, once you see the light of , there's no way back 😎👍🏻

@johnkellden Yeah, I know. In a way, it's a bit like a trip down the memory lane when blogs & Web 2.0 were making the rounds and showing us the potential, right?

The potential as described in this video clip 👉🏻 youtu.be/6gmP4nk0EOE

Talking about new beginnings ...

With this post 👉🏻 bit.ly/DoneWithMediaTools I am just saying good-bye to my last two standing ( & ) I have been using, more often than not, for the last 16+ years.

It feels a bit weird, perhaps a tad alien, but then again it's an opportunity to unlearn & relearn, starting pretty much from scratch with

Remember the good old Web 2.0? Well, that's what the & feel like for yours truly so far 😅👍🏻
