> Big snowstorms tend to reveal huge swaths of public space that drivers simply don't use β€” they appear as piles of snow and show us all exactly where neckdowns could easily be built. Hence, #sneckdown.

Build better bike infrastructure, get better drivers.

Neither of these examples is good infrastructure #pdxBikes. 4th is on the wrong side of the street, NE Broadway is mostly paint. It doesn't matter if it costs millions of dollars, it only matters if it makes drivers fear damage to the precious. #Bollards #StuffInTheStreet #FuckCars

102nd, Glisan, 122nd Ave. Known for being deadly streets. Three unarmored people killed with cars in one night. These are #crashNotAccident #trafficEngineering Design Failure, #ZeroVision. Slow down, turn your lights on, get your city to install #bollards and #stuffInTheStreet #VisionZero #Portland #pdxBikes

Instead of #SchoolStreets where we didn't try very hard to prioritize safety over motorists' feelings, at five (of 75-ish) elementary/middle schools, could we put some #stuffInTheStreet on at least one block next to every school and just make it be a #Portland norm that you're not going to cut-thru past the school at drop-off or pickup time, and if you're driving your kid maybe your car is not a pass to automatically get to run over everybody to drop them in the doorway?

I'm old enough to remember printing signs that said #StuffInTheStreet for a rally before even #Portland had adopted a #VisionZero policy, but we didn't get that in the policy, just plastic sticks and wishes 😞 #Vision60or70something #Bollards

Roundabouts don't need to be symmetric, circular, or necessarily even allow 53ft tractor-trailer trucks to make every left or a full lap. Fire engines have flashing lights and sirens and permission to drive the wrong way if needed. Get creative about putting obstacles in the way of thru traffic and you can transform an entire street network almost overnight with very little budget. #bollards #stuffInTheStreet #climateAction

πŸ˜’ "Boulder Police Department is investigating 14 illegally placed signs with explicit traffic safety messages like β€œDON’T KILL ANY KIDS TODAY” and β€œSLOW THE Fβ€” DOWN.”

Imagine road authorities doing actual #VisionZero work, putting #StuffInTheStreet with the same urgency they show in response to DIY efforts.

so is it more democratic to allow anyone to put #StuffInTheStreet and make it hard to drive fast, or to use police and the force of law to keep the street clear to maximize the speed of cars?

You had me at the #StuffInTheStreet

An intersection with "daylighting" crosswalk bump-outs with freestanding planters and plastic posts, painted asphalt. A couple is walking with a dog, someone is riding by on a bike, the space between the bump-outs is still 3x as big as it needs to be, because freedom, obvs.

@luis_in_brief @elliots I fully support more outreach as long as they get the cars out of the way and do it in the street #TacticalUrbanism #StuffInTheStreet

Let's just imagine that we took the #ClimateAction or #VisionZero plans seriously, with the urgency to quit killing people for not driving (& killing plenty of drivers too), and some actual wish to survive as a species. NONE of the current plans are within 10x of doing it. You need a different strategy. Stop building for cars and just put the actual #StuffInTheStreet that you would 🚧 if you took the lack of network seriously & opened a city-wide project to fix it this year. #TacticalUrbanism

"Evanston’s Streets Have Become Safer for Cyclists. What’s the Suburb Doing Right?"

Maybe it's the #StuffInTheStreet, but I'm just guessing. We probably need a #trafficEngineer to look at this.

"The reaction from walkers, bikers, families, and nearby business owners was overwhelmingly positive."

β€œWe'll have to see how we can apply pressure and what it takes to get the city leaders to listen or do something for safety.” (Try not letting #trafficEngineers over-inflate the costs with their convoluted excuses for trying to preserve car speeds.)
