Amusing, but traffic lights and crosswalks are car bullshit and expecting people on motorcycles to conform to car norms is a short step from anti-bicycle pedestrianism, victim-blaming individuals instead of systems etc. The source of conflict here is the width of the street and unprotected crossing distance. #Infrastructure #trafficEngineering

#FietsProfessor says the past 100yrs of #trafficEngineering seems like it was set in stone. The language we use shapes the way people think, "traffic jam / clog" is the language of sewage. And "closing streets" to cars creates #openStreets for children. Also most people find #transportation boring but #freeRangeKids, #SchoolStreets, #BikeBus capture more attention. Make #trafficEngineers argue against the idea of #AutonomousChildren not #Cyclists. @TheWarOnCars

SFMTA came back and made an attempt at clarifying their weird attempt at one quarter of a Dutch junction.

It's better, but that's not saying much. And the rubber marks on the bike-only side tell me some other cyclists might have a harsher opinion than this.

Looking west along the bike lane on 17th St at San Bruno Ave, across the odd droplet-shaped curb installed in a rather baffling attempt at emulating a protected intersection. The bike lane is unpainted on either side of the intersection, but dashed-green-striped inside it, failing at continuity and instead throwing a visual transition right behind the hazard the curb presents to cyclists not expecting the bike lane to abruptly shift 2-3 feet to the right. Rubber tire marks along the inside of the curb suggest cyclists have already started crashing into it.

It's intended that the curb force drivers to slow more for a sharper right turn that would cross the bike land and crosswalk, reducing their hazard to others and placing more of their arc of turn outside the zone of interference, thus improving their visibility. However, the curblet has been built extending only a foot or two beyond the San Bruno Ave turn, and is strongly radiused, so it alters cars' path of travel hardly at all.

As cities all over the world are implementing car-free zones, congestion pricing, and ramping up their multi-modal transit options, the GOP intends to trap Americans in a perpetual #BigOil quagmire - and their Wall St buddies of both parties seem to be in on it.

They would rather destroy the eco-sphere than provide alternatives.

I will stand by a prediction I made back in The Oil Drum days - eventually, cities won't be able to afford to maintain all that roadway, and will start returning periphery & suburban roads to gravel. The car centered infrastructure is over built & unaffordable in many places already.

More & more middle class families are now priced out of the new auto market, not to mention insurance.

That shiny car shaped future isn't coming, class.

Since 2022 people from #Freiburg are regularly demonstrating against #cartraffic in the Rempartstraße and request that the street becomes #carfree. The street lies in the middle of the central #university campus connecting several institutes, libraries and the central canteen.

Large #crowds of people move through the street by foot or by #bicycle, especially during lunch time. Unfortunately the Rempartstraße also provides access to two parking garages so there is a lot of car traffic and a high #safety risk for #pedestrians.

During a #traffic experiment in 2022 the situation improved, despite the fact that car access was only limited in one direction and many cars disregarded the rules. However due to increasing #congestion at the #parking garages the experiment was cancelled early and ever since car traffic is back to normal.

Making the Rempartstraße completely car free is an important step for Freiburg in becoming a more #sustainable, safer and more livable #city. Rather than seeing the parking garages as a prohibiting factor for the pedestrian friendly #development the protestors suggest a conversion into #bikeparking, #apartments or #publicameneties. Poeple, not cars should have priority here!

(3) This is a positive example from #Basel of how a #street can be set up to be better for #people and less attractive for #cars:

The #sidewalks are nice and wide and, while there is on street parking further down, two #bike parking islands are placed on either side. Not only do these mostly keep parked bicycles from the sidewalk, they also slow down car #traffic and provide seating options and #greenery.

(2) Similar situation further up the road on the Marktstraße in Kirrweiler: Narrow #sidewalks on both sides and on street parking. The local elementary school is just a couple of hundred meters away, so this is an important #walking route especially for #children.
