Et donc ça limite tout de suite les choix de trucs que je peux utiliser : tout ce qui nécessite une connexion USB vers une appli windows c'est mort, amarchepô sous linux ☹️
Pour le coup j'ai fait le test avec la #tcelectronic IR loader, donc l'appli se lance dans Wine mais l'appli ne peut pas détecter le device 😣 par contre en fait le device s'identifie comme un stockage de masse standard, et en fait ya un système de fichier, avec un répertoire par preset dispo (yen a 99) et il suffit de copier le fichier d'IR dedans, il va automatiquement parser le nom du fichier et l'afficher sur l'écran 😲

Je vais essayer d'installer du warez, mais j'ai peu d'espoir.
Plus généralement je me suis résolu à dédier mon laptop le plus récent à la musique, je vais virer tous les trucs de dev et ne garder que Reaper et les VST et les logiciels à la con.
Autre douche froide : les "companion apps" des devices HW, genre les logiciels d'édition de config #tcelectronic pour les toneprint. Sous #wine ça se lance, mais j'ai cru comprendre que wine ne peut pas accéder à l'USB, donc il n'arrive pas à voir le device 😭 donc obligé d'avoir un poste windows pour ça (ou une vm ptet ça marche)

Amp Sim

The RPM Challenge opened for sign ups for 2025 today. That seems a smidge early, but who cares. I haven’t signed up yet but I will. Soon. I am starting to feel the pull. I am starting to feel the anticipation. I am starting to look at my pedal board and recording setup at home and think about things I might want to change for this February’s challenge.

Last year I went entirely direct input into my USB audio interface. I have two amps with cab sim line outs and I used them both. Over the course of the last year or so there have been a ton of very good amp simulation pedals released into the world. Most are grossly expensive. TC Electronics has a series that is reasonably priced. Do I want to try one? They have one the sims a Fender Deluxe Reverb. I went looking for one on amazon the other day and they appeared to be out of stock. I checked again today at a couple of music vendor sites and they are definitely available. I must have misread the amazonian’s site somehow.

I would only ever want to use a device like this for home recording when there are people in the house. Otherwise I am playing through a real amp and just try to stop me. The demos for these pedals make it seem like they sound pretty good. Should I try one out? Should I take the amp sim plunge?

Or should I just splurge on an expensive new guitar? Or, should I splurge on an expensive new guitar?

Wow! I didn’t think they’d do it, but TC Electronic has updated their ‘Icon’ series of audio plugins to be compatible with Apple’s M series processors.

The plugins themselves are great standalone, but having the little desktop controller makes it easy to get ‘hands on’ and make tweaks based on the sound and not the visual on screen. Plus, I’ve found them to be a great teaching aid for people just getting into mixing.
