Since I've been busy riding the trails and absorbing the swedish wilderness I was a little lazy to take many pictures... but I still think I captured some beautiful moments.

Holy viking.... seems like the swedish stretch of the #TET has quadrupled in length since the last time I checked. This is going to be interesting. The weather forecast is pretty mixed but I am prepared for the most apart from snow/ice. Wish me Hals- und Beinbruch! (That's a german saying for Good luck! - please don't ask me why ;)

Imbolc

Multigrain sourdough bread

Check it out! Another sourdough! This one is multigrain. I expected it would use multigrain flour, but no, it called for 10-grain cereal to add to the dough. But my co-op only had 7-grain so I am missing three grains. Heh. No matter. It is delicious! Are y’all tired of my sourdough bread baking yet? I hope not because I have so much more to explore!

Today James and I celebrated Imbolc. On the Celtic Wheel of the Year it is the first day of spring, halfway between Winter Solstice and the Vernal Equinox. It is also, I believe, the start of lambing season. Imbolc is the time to start spring cleaning, clearing away the clutter and letting go of the things that no longer serve you. Actual Spring is still at least a month away here in Minnesota. We are expecting several inches of snow overnight and temperatures solidly below freezing for the entire week with additional chances of snow. So for me, Imbolc is not the beginning of spring, but the promise of spring. The season tells me I just have to endure the cold a little longer. I can do that!

James and I started practicing an Imbolc ritual a few years ago. We each write down on a piece of paper something we want to let go of. Then we crumple up the paper and burn it. Very satisfying. If you’d like to learn more about Imbolc (or Imbolg), visit My Solitary Hearth to read Eliza’s thorough explanation of the holiday.

Imbolc, or specifically Groundhog Day, is also the day on my garden seed starting calendar on which I plant onion seeds—indoors of course. I sowed two big pots of Rossa Lunga di Tropea onion, a red summer onion, and three pots of New York Early onion, a yellow storage onion. It was so much fun to plant seeds today! There is a monthlong stretch until the next batch of seeds get started on March 1st. Then the indoor seed starting begins in earnest with many new seeds to sow nearly every week for several weeks.

I also sowed pink Evening Primrose. These are perennials and need cold stratification in order to sprout. So I sowed them in a container and put them outdoors with the other seeds that have been out in the cold all winter. Evening primrose is a native plant and is usually yellow. This pink variety will be a fun addition to the garden. Because they open in the evening they are pollinated mainly by moths. Growing them came from James’s desire to create a nighttime moth garden. Hopefully they do well and the moths like them!

Plum Village New Year couplet

Another holiday that took place earlier in the week is Tet (Vietnam)/ Chinese New Year. I haven’t celebrated the holiday in the past, but my Buddhist sangha does, so I celebrated this year too. Maybe celebration is too much, observed is more like it. Thich Nhat Hanh, founder of the Plum Village practice tradition (this tradition sits within Mahayana/Zen/Engaged Buddhism), began many years ago writing a pair of couplet for the New Year as a gift to all the sanghas to provide a focus for our practice during the year. Thich Nhat Hanh died three years ago, but the monastics at Plum Village are keeping up the tradition.

Thursday night one of my sangha members gave a talk about the couplets and gifted us with them crafted to hang up somewhere in our homes. We have ours hanging up near our dining table so we will see it regularly. The couplets read:

each breath
gives life

each step
brings healing

Simple words but deeply meaningful.

I had a bit of unexpected bike maintenance this week. Wednesday morning on my way to work I had just made into downtown Minneapolis when I hear a loud pop! from my rear tire. It’s 6:55 a.m. and dark and I’m hoping that it was just a rock bouncing off my tire. Alas, a block and a half later my tire was completely flat. So I walked my bike all the way across downtown to work. Took me about 20 minutes of fast walking. Good thing Minneapolis has a compact downtown!

I got to work a little later than I usually would, so made a quick change of clothes and did all the things I need to do to open the library. When I got the chance, I went and looked at my bike. I planned to bus home that evening with the tire, but I couldn’t get the tire off. Oh yeah, I need a tool and I don’t have it at work. I still bussed home, just without the tire.

This was a surprise

Last week, the days were well above freezing and the snow and ice melted, so I was able to bike to work Thursday on my Brompton with the tools I needed. I got the tire off and was looking at it to see what had popped it. There was a little bit of metal sticking out of the tire and I had to pull it out with pliers. I was shocked to see it was about 1.5 inches of the end of a metal file! The file left a tear in the tread of the tire, meaning I needed a whole new tire.

James works just down the street from a bike shop so he stopped in on his way home and bought me a new tire. I biked home on my Brompton with a big tire strapped to my back. At home we wrestled off the old tire and popped tube, and put a new tube and the new tire onto the wheel. I bussed to work Friday morning with the tire, put it on the bike, and road home on it that evening. A bit more of an ordeal than expected, but it’s all good now, just in time for snow tonight!

There was much joy this week, from the sourdough bread and sangha, the “warm” weather, to planting onions and evening primroses. The chickens got to spend quite a bit of time wandering in the garden, and I laughed at them wallowing in the dirt and Ethel running back and forth on the main garden path. A running chicken is one of the greatest delights I have ever experienced.

Then there was Venus. Wow, is she bright right now! Looking out our west-facing living room window Friday evening when the sky was a gorgeous deep blue just before full dark, the waxing crescent moon hung just above the trees. The scoop of the crescent and the “arms” were tipped exactly towards Venus and it looked like the Moon was inviting her in for a hug. Venus kept her distance playing hard-to-get. I gave the Moon a mental hug so she wouldn’t feel slighted and lonely.

Reading

  • Book: The Notebook: A History of Thinking on Paper by Roland Allen. This was such a fun read! I am having a hard time suppressing the urge to go on a notebook buying spree. Interestingly, the first use of notebooks was likely as accounting ledgers. If you like notebooks, you will definitely want to read this sometime.
  • Book: Sea of Ink by Richard Weihe, translated from German by Jamie Bulloch. A fictionalized life of the Chinese painter Bada Shanren. It’s infused with Taoism, art, life, and some beautiful examples of Shanren’s paintings. A short, meditative read.
  • Press release from the U.S. Department of Education: U.S. Department of Education Ends Biden’s Book Ban Hoax. President Biden had created a coordinator position within the Department of Education to help coordinate the large number of book ban complaints. That person also worked with schools to provide guidance and training on how to handle requests to ban books. Well, the new administration has eliminated the coordinator position and dismissed all the book ban complaints stating there was no book banning taking place at all, that it was a falsely amplified narrative and outright hoax. Pen America, the American Library Association and EveryLibrary, have all released statements.

Quote

“If you are guided by human feelings you will easily lose your way, … but if you are guided by nature you will rarely go wrong.”

Richard Weihe, Sea of Ink

  • Podcast: To the Best of Our Knowledge, Kinship series: Plants as Persons. A new to me podcast, and I am really going to like it. This is from their first season on kinship. The hosts talked with Robin Wall Kimmerer, botanist Matt Hall who wrote the book Plants as Persons, Monica Gagliano an evolutionary ecologist and research scientist who talks with plants and studies plant intelligence, and Brooke Hecht an ecologist who talked about the healing power of plants.
  • Podcast: Listening to the Land: Land-based Ceremony, Ritual and Vigil. A perfect discussion for Imbolc. If you are looking for ways to create your own land-based ceremonies and rituals you might enjoy giving this one a listen for some inspiration.

James’s Kitchen Wizardry

This week we had yummy stuffed baked potatoes. We also had soup this evening made with beans from the garden. James used the succotash beans and scarlet runner beans. There was also wild rice, seitan, onion and herbs and spices in the soup. My fresh sourdough bread was a perfect partner to the soup.
