#Tagging

Tip of the day: Emojis are often used to convey emotions, thoughts, or actions. They are also sometimes used as visual indicators to provide more context to documents. But should you use them in #DEVONthink 🧐? #pkm #productivity #tagging #tipoftheday devontechnologies.com/blog/202

...while using freeform tagging is more future-proof, but I'd also have to restructure in order to convert the existing true-false fields to that, and ALSO figure out a way of deriving the true-false values needed by the scripts.

So I am PONDERING.

And this is probably all too technical for those of you who aren't programmers, but...
Dealing with the limitations of how I read the meta-data, and whether things should be stored as true-false values, or as more freeform strings...
The true-false values are easier to script things from, but would require adding a new field for this (restructuring) and how many times would I have to do that in the future?

Hierarchies 😩... One of the biggest recurring time-consuming issues I sometimes encounter is making decisions about _where_ to put some (new or exisiting) code/feature, i.e. in which package, new or existing, considering: functional fit (topic), structural fit (pre-existing data format conventions with the rest of a package), and if possible, not introducing new dependencies as a result of new feature... Sometimes these three aspects are mutually blocking each other and it's so time consuming to figure out a solution...

I've got very similar issues with most other static hierarchies (e.g. directory-based file systems, hierarchical websearch directories etc.) and why I think tag-based systems (with intersection/union/negation ops, not just single categories) are a superior way to organize large collections of knowledge (counting source code here too as a form of encoded knowledge). It's also one of the reasons I've been experimenting with and building tools with completely flat collections/graphs and then use queries & transclusion to assemble/extract/select functionality on demand... Need to prepare some screen recordings to share more of those tools/experiments...

Tip of the day: Tags can be very effective for organizing your databases. But it is often tedious to assign them to each document by hand, isn’t it? That’s why #DEVONthink and #DEVONthinkToGo can dynamically add and remove tags to objects. Here are two options for dynamic tagging. #pkm #productivity #tagging #tipoftheday devontechnologies.com/blog/202

Tip of the day: Do you need to clear out empty tags that have piled up and are collecting dust? Here is an easy way to locate and remove them from any database in #DEVONthink. #pkm #productivity #tagging #tipoftheday devontechnologies.com/blog/202

Why oh why is the input field for tags (shortcut: Ctrl-T) so damn tiny??

Makes no sense at all.
Wish I could change that.

Tags are sets. Many apps support tagging of content, but most of them (incl. Mastodon) treat tags only as singular/isolated topic filters, akin to a flat folder-based approach. But tagging can be so, so much more powerful when treating tags as sets and offering users the possibility to combine and query tagged content as sets (think Venn diagrams), i.e. allowing tags to be combined using AND/OR/NOT aka intersection/union/difference operations...

Below is a simple query engine to do just that in ~40 lines of code (sans comments), incl. using an extensible interpreter for a simple Lisp-like S-Expression language to define arbitrarily complex nested tag queries (the code is actually lifted & simplified from my personal knowledge graph tooling, also talked about here recently[1]...)

gist.github.com/postspectacula

For example, the query:

`(and (or 'Alps' 'PNW') (or 'LandscapePhotography' 'NaturePhotography') (not 'Monochrome'))`

...would select all items which have been tagged with `Alps` OR `PNW`, AND have at least one of the two photography tags given, but have NOT the `Monochrome` tag.

Whilst this syntax is probably alien-looking to the average user, it'd would be fairly straightforward to create visual/structural UIs for defining such queries (over the past 20 years I've done that myself several times already), heck even a SLM (small language model) could be used to translate natural language into such query expressions — what matters here is the widespread lack of treating tags this way in terms of conceptual/data modeling in most applications. Imagine being able to use hashtags this way on Mastodon to assemble personalized timelines (and extend the system to not just deal with hashtags, but other post metadata/provenance too)...

The code example illustrates how, with the right tools, such features are actually not hard to implement (or to integrate into existing apps). The example uses the following #ThingUmbrella packages for its key functionality:

- thi.ng/associative: Set-theory operations, custom Map/Set data types (unused here)
- thi.ng/lispy: Customizable/extensible S-expression parser, interpreter & runtime
- thi.ng/oquery: Optimized object and array pattern query engine

Can you help me with an information storage and retrieval problem?

I have more than 2000 YouTube videos saved in 65 playlists. I would like to search for particular videos, but YouTube does not make it easy.

So I thought about doing something like this:

1) Create a document that would list every saved video with its URL.

2) Create a preliminary list of descriptive tags for the videos.

3) Begin the task of tagging each entry on the video listing in the document , adding new tags when necessary.

4) Find an application that would allow me to search the document using Boolean operators and parentheses.

Although Step 3 will be time consuming, I understand what I would be doing there.

However, I'm very unsure of myself with regard to step 4. A librarian suggested that I use Evernote, while an online search came up with a spreadsheet as the appropriate application for my purposes.

I have never used Evernote ( I don't even know what it is!), and am not familiar with spreadsheet operation, being more of a pencil and paper gradebook bloke.

I am not a tech person, have only a limited knowledge of information storage and retrieval, and would prefer not to use Microsoft or Google applications on my Linux desktop. I would also prefer not to have to buy anything.

Does anybody have any suggestions for step 4?

In addition, please don't hesitate to tell me if I am thinking about my YouTube searching problem in the wrong way and that I need to adopt a wholly different approach to solving it.

@writingslowly I had a previous note on bricolage? It’s odd, because I just today wondered if I should use that metaphor as I finish the piece.

I’m thinking of Zettelkasten structure as a sort of opposite of Platonism. Something like Wittgensteinian language games? but I found myself wondering yesterday how Wittgenstein would have turned out were the dominant metaphor #tagging rather than categorization.
