Frustrated that macOS TextEdit only wants to save a file in RTF format? Command-Shift-T in TextEdit will convert the open file to plain text. #macOS #textedit #tips
🎉 Behold the latest groundbreaking revelation: #TextEdit is the hero we didn't know we needed! While the world spirals into #AI #chaos 🤖, a basic writing app saves us from the complexities of modern tech—because who doesn't love a good #ThrowbackThursday to the '80s? 📎✍️

I just discovered that the #macOS #TextEdit app has an interesting feature: it can do math!
For example, if you type the expression “640*480=” then it will autocomplete “307,200”.
I wonder if any other #editor s have this feature?
#KDE 's #Kate does not have this feature, but #KDEPlasma does have something similar: you can type “640*480” into #KRunner (Alt+F2) and press Shift+Enter to copy the answer into the clipboard. Then you can paste it into your document.
Neat!
TextEdit is driving me nuts. Not only is there no way to make "paste without formatting" the default (and they call it "paste and match styles", which is just... WTF, your mindset is so utterly backwards from mine), but also they made the keyboard chord for it completely finger-breaking. Seriously, ⌥⇧⌘V? Try putting your fingers on all those keys at once. Especially compared to the ease of ⌘V!
Someone was just being an asshole.

I love Kate, and I think it's nuts to have an app like that as the "default" text editor on #KDE when you compare to what you get on other OSes like Notepad on #Windows and #TextEdit on #macOS :blobfoxboop_w_:
I think the only 2 things that subtly spoils my experience using Kate if you're familiar with other options the likes of #VSCode, #Sublime, etc. is 1) you cannot open links found in your text through a (combination) click, something you could do in a lot of other text editors, even the terminal, and 2) just little things like the fact that it's unnecessarily awkward to go the next/previous (text) match when trying to find a particular word in your file - this is so jarring bcos this basic thing should be easy but on Kate, it's... awkward due to the out of place and dynamic positioning of the buttons.
But all in all though, besides the two points, it's an insanely solid option - I love the design, its plugin system (tho I avoid using it since it's for me more so a Notepad/#NotepadPlusPlus replacement (i.e. default text editor) rather than a VS Code replacement), and just ease of use. I could totally see myself using it as my primary code editor if I wasn't just so used to VS Code already.

Enabled Apple's "Intelligence"/AI feature, used it for an hour, then turned it off. That was two weeks ago, and since then, my system has been a mess. Starting #Pages or #TextEdit (and many other apps) caused #corespotlightd to spike to 180% CPU usage, freezing everything. Finally fixed it by deleting a folder in ~/Library... now it's running smoothly again. @Apple, what's going on?! 🤔
Has anyone noticed how TextEdit is working now? I don't remember such performance ever. It takes a couple of seconds to open a 3gb text file.
I have just had to upload a half-dozen #government #job related documents to #googledrive b/c otherwise they're so full of images and associated formatting that they're completely unreadable using #textedit, and I don't have #word b/c I don't nned it.
Just doing some notes for #TheCelestialToymaker and #TextEdit’s version of Autocorrect has changed Peter Purves into Peter Privies …
I'm slow to upgrade #MacOS, preferring to stay about one rev behind to minimize churn, and avoid new bugs when updating my various tools & workflows.
The #MacOSVentura upgrade just before Xmas, was smooth except for the most basic tool: #Apple's #TextEdit app. It's been terrible!
I use it heavily for note-taking, 'cuz it's lightweight, handles text styles well and has always been solid.
TextEdit rev1.18 is fails on text styling, selecting and most importantly on text search…
new macOS #Sonoma cannot write my main.py file under #VisualStudioCode. It's empty and my keyboard is broken. But #TextEdit can write the file.

I have now a new key combo: middle and ring finger on the right side one row down for a hash.
