The last few days I've been receiving text messages from unknown short codes consisting only of an attachment. Of course I delete the thread without opening. ¿But does anyone know what's going on? ¿Is this a new attack surface?

Why? Today, following our fav ride route (birdsongs, wildflowers, trees playing w/ sun & shadows), we returned home via our necessary but least fav route (CA SR 68), cautiously & safely.
Then we headed up the lane home. Surprise! We were immediately met by a vehicle smack in center of the road, oblivious to & aimed right at us—despite us being “lit up like a Christmas tree,” as is our habit.
Fortunately, driver didn’t have pedal to the metal; more #speed would’ve meant a different end! We had time to jump off #bike & outa his way.
US: I don’t think you saw me.
HIM: I didn’t! I was looking at my phone. [Points for taking responsibility, not reacting rudely w/ excuses.]
US: I love you, but be careful!
He’s a nice guy, familiar as a guest of another resident on this lane. We don’t think he’ll do it again!
As we tell youth in bike ed, being visible & predictable is one of best ways to keep yourself safe—but can’t protect you from #texting drivers!

Alright, so just a little thing since I'm a curious creature! Why has voice chat been going down so much these days? It still seems to be pretty prevalent in the blind community for obvious reasons, but everywhere else I see it seems that creatures would rather text than talk. It kinda makes me sad, ya know. I just feel like it's so hard to make a connection over text alone. How can you truly understand how someone feels when you cannot get any indication of how they feel other than what they say. I am not accusing anyone of lying or anything, but sometimes we don't know how to express something, and the voice can tell a lot more than I think a lot of creatures realize. So I'm wondering what other creatures have to say about this. Why do y'all think this is? Also, if any creatures are like me and prefer to talk rather than text, I am always open, feel free to reach out anyway you can find me. I use #Google Messages for #texting. It's not bad but its only solid features are the #spam blocking and the fact I can use it in a web browser. Oh, and #RCS (as questionable as that may be).
I'd really like to move away from it because, well....Google, but I haven't found a suitable replacement - either on Google Play or F-Droid.
Most #SMS apps are rather bare bones when it comes to features. I am looking for something better.
I am on my second try for Messages on F-Droid but it once again never finishes syncing messages. I deleted over 60 large old conversations and still it gets to about 2/3 done before restarting. I let it run overnight and it never finished.
