@nzlemming Late stage capitalism + #ClimateEmergency is a doozy. Bill McKibben gave a lecture a few years back on temperatures rising globally enough that by 2050 humans would struggle to find breathable air. Like you I wonder if that year will be 2035 for ending human civilization as we currently know it. #EndTimes

The global economy must be radically transformed to stop it rewarding pollution and waste, UN secretary general Antรณnio Guterres has warned.

We must place true value on the environment and go beyond GDP as a measure of human progress and wellbeing.

By the late 21st century, most regions in Africa will stop having occasional heatwaves and will suffer from extreme heat lasting most of the year. A study shows that by 2065-2100, many parts of Africa (apart from Madagascar) could experience heatwaves on 250-300 days per year.

โ€žAccording to geologists and environmental experts, the landslide in Niscemi is the latest sign of how the #climateemergency is reshaping the Mediterranean, where there has been indifference to decades of flawed building policies and an out-of-control model of urbanisation.โ€œ

'Dr. Aaron Thierryโ€ช @thierryaaron.bsky.social: "This is not just a slight warming; it is a fundamental change in how people will have to survive on the continent.
Once regions in Africa enter a state of almost continuous heatwaves, the human body will have no window of time to recover." '

As climate disasters drive up the price of home insurance, three US states are considering empowering their state prosecutors to sue major polluters for their role in those rising costs.

We know that the years ahead are going to be dramatically more dangerous, tragically, when it comes to climate disasters, and we canโ€™t allow our residents, our small businesses, to be left holding the bag.

It's good to see this written down. A couple of years ago I did an environmental science related MSc, thinking I would like to do more meaningful work (help save the planet!). One of the reasons I haven't pursued it is that it felt like I would just be documenting the decline of everything. Obviously the science is important, but even more evidence that everything is awful doesn't feel like it is going to change anything now :( #ClimateEmergency
