"How hard they work to define the slave as inhuman, savage, when in fact the definition of the inhuman describes overwhelmingly the punisher. ... The necessity of rendering the slave a foreign species appears to be a desperate attempt to confirm one’s own self as normal. The urgency of distinguishing between those who belong to the human race and those who are decidedly non-human is so powerful the spotlight turns away and shines not on the object of degradation but on its creator. Even assuming exaggeration by the slaves, the sensibility of slave owners is gothic. It’s as though they are shouting:

<<I AM NOT A BEAST! I’m not a beast! I torture the helpless to prove I am not weak. >>

The danger of sympathizing with the stranger is the possibility of becoming a stranger. To lose one’s racial-ized rank is to lose one’s own valued and enshrined difference."

Toni Morrison was a Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist whose work explored Black American life with lyrical intensity. Her novels, including "Beloved," "Song of Solomon," and "The Bluest Eye," redefined the American literary canon, fusing mythic resonance with psychological realism to confront the inherited trauma of slavery and memory.

"BELOVED," a novel by Toni Morrison. The cover is typography-only with no illustrations or imagery. The background is off-white or cream, uniform across the entire surface. The title "BELOVED" dominates the upper half in very large, bold, uppercase serif letters rendered in deep red. Each letter is tall and narrow with pronounced vertical strokes. A black drop shadow sits behind and slightly to the left of each red letter, creating a layered dimensional effect. Below the title, centered in much smaller black uppercase serif type, appears the subtitle "A NOVEL." The lower half features the author's name, "TONI MORRISON," in large uppercase serif letters colored in dark green. The green type is slightly smaller than the red title but commands significant visual weight. The letters in the author's name share the same tall, narrow serif style as the title. A thin horizontal red line runs beneath the author's name near the bottom edge. The overall composition is vertically stacked and centered, with generous white space separating the title block from the author's name. The design relies entirely on contrast between three colors — red, green, and black — against the pale background. The typography is elegant and formal, with a classic book-design sensibility. No publisher's logo, imagery, or additional text is visible. The red and green are saturated and bold, producing a stark, high-contrast graphic appearance that emphasizes the weight of the text alone.

Fascism talks ideology, but it is really just marketing—marketing for power. It is recognizable by its need to purge, by the strategies it uses to purge, and by its terror of truly democratic agendas. It is recognizable by its determination to convert all public services to private entrepreneurship, all nonprofit organizations to profit-making ones—so that the narrow but protective chasm between governance and business disappears... ―

It changes citizens into taxpayers—so individuals become angry at even the notion of the public good. It changes neighbors into consumers—so the measure of our value as humans is not our humanity or our compassion or our generosity but what we own. It changes parenting into panicking—so that we vote against the interests of our own children; against their health care, their education, their safety from weapons... ―

And in effecting these changes it produces the perfect capitalist, one who is willing to kill a human being for a product (a pair of sneakers, a jacket, a car) or kill generations for control of products (oil, drugs, fruit, gold). ―

"The forces interested in fascist solutions to national problems are not to be found in one political party or another, or in one or another wing of any single political party.

... the genius of fascism is that any political structure can host the virus and virtually any developed country can become a suitable home. Fascism talks ideology, but it is really just marketing — marketing for power."

"I’m not a victim. I refuse to be one… if you can only be tall because somebody is on their knees, then you have a serious problem. And my feeling is that white people have a very, very serious problem and they should start thinking about what they can do about it. Take me out of it." –
