#TowPath

We're back at the cottage in #PrestonBrook and, last night, took a walk down the #towpath of the #Bridgewater #Canal to the north portal of the #tunnel.

In almost the middle of nowhere it was a surprise to find a #bookexchange facility. I really wish I'd taken more notice of it, like how far it is from the tunnel mouth and whether it can be seen from a passing #boat. Not that I can imagine any passing boat would rush to moor and examine the bookcase's contents.

A bookcase found on the towpath. of the Bridgewater Canal. Beside it is a blue bin with a notice saying "poo bags only" (or something to that effect)North Portal Preston Brook Tunnel on the Bridgewater CanalLooking northwards from the North Portal of the Preston Brook tunnel.

To keep dry while underway, some boaters use a pramโ€”a tent-like shelter with plastic-sheet windows. But prams must be lowered at each bridge.

Not just prams; boaters, cyclists and pedestrians also must duck.

Downhill of each lock, canal towpaths descend sharply, like a rampโ€”the horses that towed canal boats had to stay level beside the boat.

Where those ramps dive under a low, unlit bridge: duck!
